Bottom Line

Situated in Mauritius’ quieter northeast region, the mid-range Jalsa Beach Hotel and Spa is ideally suited for travelers seeking a bit more to do than offered by most of the island’s mid-range hotels. There’s little in the surrounding area, but the solid list of resort-style amenities: a semi-private beach, a beautiful pool with an adjacent bar, and a large, open-air, buffet restaurant with all-day dining -- should keep most travelers happy. All 66 rooms blend traditional and contemporary design elements and feature flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and private patios/balconies. Suites upgrade to spacious, multi-room layouts and sea-view balconies. Radisson Blu Poste Lafayette Resort & Spa, Mauritius offers more sophistication in an adult-only, all-inclusive package for slightly higher rates.

Oyster Hotel Review

Jalsa Beach Hotel and Spa

Scene

Low-key beachfront resort ideal for both couples and families

Large grounds give the illusion that the resort is larger and more luxe than it is. The tropical landscaping, vaguely sophisticated architecture, and ever-present, island-inspired tunes from the rum bar all remind guests they’re on vacation. But, the lack of a definable wow factor creates a distinctly mid-range feel to it all. Given the competitive nightly rates (relative to comparable area hotels) and good list of essential amenities, however, it’s easy to imagine most budget-minded guests not minding a bit. The hotel attracts a mix of couples and families who can imprint on the hotel their own brand of vacation -- either romantic or kid-friendly, respectively.

Location

Isolated on a quiet, coastal road away from most attractions

The winding coastal road adjacent the resort is dotted with residences, guesthouses, and other hotels. The surrounding Poste Lafayette region is quiet year-round, meaning there's little within walking distance. Hikers and nature lovers will find the beautiful Bras D’Eau National Park (across the street) worth a look as it’s home to exotic birds and other species found nowhere else in the world. Guests looking for additional dining and activity options will need to rent a car or hail a taxi and drive at least 20 minutes in either direction. Mauritius’ only major airport, Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam International (MRU), is more than an hour south by car. Paid shuttle service is available throughout the hotel, while taxi rates are reasonable and typically negotiable.

Rooms

Traditional rooms with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and private balconies

Room decor is bright and simple. Dark wood furniture, boldly painted accent walls, and generic tropical artwork adorns each space. Every room category offers similar amenities but differs mainly in layout. Standard Rooms offer studio-style hotel room layouts with a balcony, while Deluxe Rooms offer a bit more space plus a pool- or sea-view balcony. Upgraded categories add multi-room floor plans and multiple private balconies (some overlooking the water). All feature mini-fridges, free Wi-Fi, and flat-screen satellite TVs. Bathrooms in most rooms are of average size and come with hairdryers and either showers or tubs. Some upgraded rooms add two-person jetted hot tubs.

Features

A semi-private beach, a pristine water-view pool, and an open-air buffet restaurant

Features focus on a beach vacation. The wide, semi-private beach is lovely and well-maintained. The soft sand and good mix of sun and shade throughout the day provide a great atmosphere for relaxing in the many chaise lounge chairs. A rocky breakwater contains the hotel’s beach within a calm lagoon ensuring the water is incredibly still. Unfortunately, it’s shallow any time of day: waist-high at high tide and ankle-high at low tide -- making for difficult swimming or snorkeling. A boathouse at the far end of the beach hosts some free water sports and additional motorized water sports are available for a fee.

At the center of the property, a sparkling outdoor pool supports the social scene day and night. Drinks start flowing by late morning at the adjacent open-air bar. After dark, a dedicated stage hosts karaoke and live music to liven up the atmosphere. It’s typically family-friendly, and rarely rises to the level of an all-out party.

The main dining space, Hartopp Restaurant, is situated in a large, breezy, open-air building far from the beach and pool. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are all served buffet-style with a good mix of authentic Mauritian, Indian, and Western-friendly fare. The food quality receives mixed reviews, however.

The small spa is well-maintained with a bright, modern decor. The menu of treatments includes traditional massage and beauty services, plus there are a sauna and hamam (traditional Turkish bath). The tiny gym is clean and has only a handful of dated cardio machines. Wi-Fi is available in every common area including the beach. Ample self-parking is provided in a large, gated lot with 24-hour surveillance.
