Bottom Line

The Marquette Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton is an upper-middle-range Hilton property connected to the IDS Center and at the center of the city’s Skyway system. Its 282 rooms are spacious, but some guests find the decor a bit dated. The hotel has two restaurants and a lounge, ample meeting and event space, and a 24-hour fitness center on-site, plus guests staying on the Executive Level can utilize a lounge with a free breakfast and evening appetizers. Guests should note, however, that parking is limited and pricey, and there’s a fee for in-room Wi-Fi (free in public spaces). For something with more stylish and modern decor, travelers might want to check out the The Commons Hotel -- but it's not located downtown.

The Marquette Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton

Scene

Modern chain hotel connected to a high-rise

The Marquette Hotel, Curio Collection by Hilton is connected to the tallest building in the state, the 57-story IDS Center, which is filled with corporate offices. The hotel’s lobby feels a bit corporate itself, yet elegant, with sleek marble floors, silver planters, and a neutral black, white, and gray color scheme. The on-site breakfast restaurant, Basil’s, features lime green and blue accents as well as floor-to-ceiling curtains hanging in doorways, while Jacques Restaurant & Bar, renovated after our visit, has a sleek, long bar. The property attracts many business travelers, though leisure travelers also take advantage of the convenient location.

Location

Excellent location in downtown Minneapolis near restaurants and attractions

The hotel is connected to the IDS Center in downtown Minneapolis. The center has a few fast food restaurants inside and is at the center of the city’s Skyway system, a collection of enclosed footbridges between buildings that allow travelers to maneuver through downtown without being subjected to the outside weather. It’s a block off Nicollet Mall, a 12-block pedestrian mall filled with shops and restaurants. It’s also within a seven-minute walk to Target Center, home of the Minnesota Timberwolves. It’s a four-minute walk to Nicollet Mall Station, making Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport a 30-minute ride and the Mall of America a 45-minute ride on the metro.

Rooms

Bright, spacious rooms with slightly dated decor

Rooms at the hotel are spacious and bright with large windows that fill them with natural light. Decor is rather uninspiring, however, with white walls, dated blue-and-white carpeting with geometric designs, and light wood furnishings like curved desks, headboards, and dressers. Amenities include coffee- and tea-making facilities, flat-screen TVs with free HBO service, and mini-fridges. Wi-Fi is available for a fee (free for Hilton Honors members -- the hotel's loyalty club that's free to join), though it's free in some rooms, such as the Business Class units. Bathrooms are modern with lots of counter space, a makeup mirror, and Peter Thomas Roth toiletries; they typically have a walk-in shower or shower/tub combo with glass doors, and in many cases, rainfall showerheads. Suites have living areas as well as extra features like additional TVs, DVD players, CD players, and sofa beds. Executive Level rooms have access to the private Executive Lounge with free breakfast and other perks.

Features

Two restaurants on-site, 24-hour fitness center, and meeting rooms

The hotel has two restaurants on-site: Basil's restaurant, which serves breakfast, and Jacques Restaurant & Bar, which provides Mediterranean/Northern Italian cuisine for lunch and dinner, as well as a daily happy hour. Guests staying in Executive Level rooms have access to a private lounge where a free breakfast and evening appetizers are provided. The hotel has a 24-hour fitness center with hand weights as well as weight and cardio machines including four treadmills. Business travelers are catered to with nine meeting rooms and a business center with two PCs and a Mac. The hotel is pet-friendly and pet beds and bowls are available.

The hotel is committed to earth-friendly initiatives including recycling and conservation efforts. There’s a rooftop garden where vegetables and herbs are grown for the restaurants, and there are three rooftop bee hives with over 10,000 bees making honey that is used in menu items and cocktails.

Guests should note that parking is limited and pricey, and that Wi-Fi incurs an added fee (free for Hilton Honors members).
