Bottom Line

The Pointe Plaza is a 70-room, mid-range hotel with affordable rates and spacious suites that cater to budget-conscious guests and families, many who are looking for proximity to the Hasidic Jewish community or the music scene of Williamsburg. While the immediate area doesn't offer much in the way of restaurants, shops, or attractions, the hotel provides a handful of services to alleviate that stranded feeling. Morning shuttles take guests to the subway and Times Square while suites allow room to spread out in decent-sized quarters that include separate living areas, kitchens, and free Wi-Fi.

Pointe Plaza Hotel

Scene

Large rooms and bargain rates help compensate for an inconvenient location.

The Pointe Plaza's location in a tight-knit Hasidic Jewish community is evidence that the hotel caters heavily to visiting families who practice the religion. Yet the hotel's affordable rates paired with its Williamsburg address also make it popular with those embarking on cruises out of the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal as well as musicians and artists looking for spacious digs within easy reach of music venues such as the Music Hall of Williamsburg, Glasslands, The Knitting Factory, and Pete's Candy Store.

The five-story hotel is a trek (15 minutes by subway) from the hipster scene of Williamsburg. The Pointe Plaza's location, set at a busy, unattractive intersection, is devoid of services such as hip coffee shops, dive bars, or farm-to-table restaurants but it buzzes with residents donning standard black suits and black hats going about their day.

Inside, the hotel offers a bright lobby outfitted with a retro mosaic tile floor, a 24-hour coffee station, and plenty of seating areas where guests can relax while waiting for car service or to check in. A cookie jar stocked with treats from a nearby kosher bakery entices guests to mingle with the staff, who can provide suggestions on how to navigate transportation into Manhattan or offer ideas for exploring the surrounding neighborhoods of Brooklyn, including Williamsburg, Fort Greene, and Downtown Brooklyn.

Location

On a gray, mostly residential block, a 15-minute subway ride to the action of downtown Williamsburg, longer to Manhattan

The Pointe Plaza is located at the southern border of Williamsburg, Brooklyn in a Hasidic Jewish community. The immediate surroundings are mostly gray, somewhat gritty streets with many residential buildings, a school, and several congregations and religious centers. It's a 10-minute walk to the nearest subway station and 15-minute subway ride to get to the epicenter of downtown Williamsburg. Getting into Manhattan requires a longer (40-minute) time commitment on the subway. While no shops or restaurants are within the immediate area, guests can walk two blocks south to Myrtle Street to find a collection of local spots serving everything from soul food to barbecue and microbrews.

  • 10-minute walk to the G Train at Flushing Avenue
  • 12-minute walk to the Pratt Institute
  • 15-minute walk to the J and M trains at Lorimer Street
  • 15-minute subway ride or 5-minute drive to downtown Williamsburg

Rooms

Spacious and bright with kitchenettes and separate living areas

The hotel's 70 suites are distributed over five floors with some rooms on the top floors offering skylights and gorgeous Manhattan skyline views. Rooms on the fourth floor benefit from high ceilings while rooms on the lower floors have their views blocked by window etchings designed for privacy.

The suites are organized into five categories ranging from the smallest standard rooms with two twin beds to the largest suites, which can house a family of five. Designed to accommodate families, the suites feature wide closets stocked with extra blankets, pillows, and rollaway beds and living areas with pull-out sofa beds and small dining tables. Kitchens are finished with microwaves, two-burner cooktops, refrigerators, and in some rooms, two sinks (designated for dairy and meat, for guests keeping kosher). Honey-colored wood cabinets with modern brushed chrome handles can be stocked with the necessary utensils (by alerting the front desk at check in).

Overall, the suites are spacious and bright, outfitted with modern touches such as brushed chrome fixtures and lighting, flat-screen TVs, and attractive artwork and large photographs of classic New York City scenes (such as the Empire State Building). Neutral color palettes feature taupe textured carpet, basic chocolate brown leather chairs, and dark brown wood laminate furniture.

Most of the bedrooms are on the small side, featuring two separate beds (twins or doubles) or one king (two twins pushed together). In many cases the beds have one side bumping up against the wall.  Beds are outfitted with brown stitched leather headboards, basic white linens, and coordinating throws and accent pillows. Televisions in some rooms are mounted within wall cabinets that can be locked.

Bathrooms are sufficiently finished with large ceramic tiles in neutral tones, vessel sinks, and bathtub/showers. They are stocked with plenty of white towels and a generous selection of Aroma bath amenities.
