Bottom Line

The Airport Honolulu Hotel makes good on its name, as it is located less than a half-mile from the Honolulu International Airport. Its close proximity to the airport draws business travelers and those with overnight layovers who need functional rooms but few frills. The rooms have some useful amenities (including flat-screen TVs and microwaves), but they are quite small and have some of the worst views in Honolulu. Owned by the Hawaii-based Outrigger Enterprises Group, which operates several other hotels in Waikiki, this property doesn't bill itself as anything more than a convenient stay for those travelers who need to be close to the airport.

Scene

Dated tropical style between the airport and a major freeway

The basic lobby with its shiny floors and drop ceiling is dressed up with some glass tile and a few Hawaiian touches to be more inviting. There's even an outrigger canoe (nod to the name of the owning chain) on display. Tired travelers with early flights or layovers make up most of the guests and the surrounding area is predictably dismal with heavy freeway traffic.

Location

On Nimitz Highway between the Queen Liliuokalani Freeway and the airport

Located right under the freeway and next to the airport, the hotel stands in a gritty area with no shopping or nightlife options around. There is little more than a dive bar and a Starbucks within walking distance. Downtown Honolulu is around a 15-minute drive and Waikiki is about a 20-minute drive away from the hotel; both are easily accessed from the freeway. Military personnel staying at the hotel may find it convenient that Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam and Tripler Army Medical Center are both less than a 10-minute drive from the property.

Rooms

Dated tropical style with mini-fridges and microwaves

The rooms are furnished in a forgettable tropical style with green carpets, white furniture, and floral-patterned throws at the foot of the beds. Framed prints of tropical flowers and landscapes hang on the walls. Each room has standard amenities, including a coffeemaker, mini-fridge, and flat-screen TV. Other useful features include microwaves and free Wi-Fi. The bathrooms are simple and functional with clean shower/tub combos. Pet-friendly and handicap-accessible rooms are available. Everything appears well-maintained, but some guests have occasionally complained about cockroaches.

Features

Free airport shuttle, outdoor pool, and pet-friendly amenities

An outdoor pool has ample lounge chairs and tables surrounded by a bit of green space in a large central courtyard. The restaurant, Willoughbys, has a view of the pool and serves a daily breakfast, but dinner service is limited to certain days. The hotel offers a free shuttle to the nearby Best Western to eat at their restaurant instead. There is also a small store in the hotel selling snacks, souvenirs, and other sundries.A 2,166-square-foot ballroom can be divided into 3 separate meeting rooms to accommodate multiple functions at once. There is also a small business center with a couple of computers available for guest use. The hotel gym is also quite tiny, as it is comprised of just several exercise machines housed in one room. For pet owners, a fee for furry companions comes with a travel-size gift pack of dry dog food, biscuits, bottled water, and a waste bag. There’s also a grassy enclosure to take pets without having to deal with the uninviting surrounding area. Most importantly, the free airport shuttle operates around the clock.
