Mid-range Hotel del Marquesado offers 30 contemporary rooms in the city of Oaxaca about a 15-minute walk to the “Centro” heart of Oaxaca -- where most sites are located. Once an old colonial mansion, Maerquesado was reinvented with a bold contemporary look (dressed in bright pink) -- in striking contrast to many of Oaxaca’s more traditional colonial hotels. Rooms are spacious, spotless, and comfortable, with basic amenities like flat-screen TVs and free toiletries, but that’s about it. Features include a small breakfast restaurant, free Wi-Fi, and an expansive open-air lobby where guests can peacefully linger and lounge. Those seeking a calm, modest, contemporary hotel base who don’t crave frills nor mind the level walk (or a quick cab ride) into town, should be happy here. Travelers who appreciate the modern decor, but crave more features, could try the Holiday Inn Express Oaxaca-Centro Historico.
Scene
A “colonial turned contemporary” mansion with a quiet vibe and a colorful pink persona
Set on a busy main road traveling in and out of Oaxaca City, Hotel del Marquesado is impossible to miss. Its colonial facade, dressed in brilliant fuchsia with charcoal trim, is a striking statement that differentiates this property from other more Old World hotels about town, and alludes to the contemporary look inside. Like many Oaxacan hotels, Marquesado was an old colonial mansion, and while it still retains its original structure, grand wrought iron gates, and stately fountain courtyard, interiors have been taken in a distinctly modern, vibrant, and open-plan direction. The vast lobby is half covered and half alfresco -- opening onto a small but effective lush lawn and palm-treed garden. Rooms unfold over two levels on one side via open-air walkways that look down on the alfresco spaces below. The property is ever-so-quiet and wonderfully maintained. Guests appreciate the convenient location, praise the cleanliness, and enjoy the helpful local insight from reception staff.
Location
In the north-western area of Oaxaca City, walking distance to highlights
Situated on a busy main road that travels in and out of the city -- Marquesado resides in a somewhat scruffy side of town (in contrast to the picturesque historic district). The property isn’t as central as others, but is nevertheless within walking (or short driving) distance of sites. It’s six minutes on foot to the Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude, and 10 minutes to San Felipe Neri Temple. The Zocalo (Oaxaca’s lively main square), Benito Juarez Markets, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, are all around 15 minutes on foot or seven minutes by car. Walkable restaurants scatter the area, and there is a cafe and supermarket just up the road. The 10- to 15-minute stroll into the city center has a plethora of dining choices. Arguably the city’s most iconic landmark, Santo Domingo Temple, is nine minutes by car (or 18 minutes on foot). The reception staff can arrange (dirt cheap) cabs and offers insight on local must-see sights. The road on which Marquesado sits becomes Ave de la Indepencia -- a main thoroughfare that runs right through the center of town (past the Zocalo) and makes navigation from Marquesado a breeze.
Rooms
Spacious, modern, and spotless with comfortable beds, bold pink flair, and basic amenities
Set over two levels around the open courtyard, Marquesado’s 30 rooms come in Single (king), Double (two twins), and Family (three bed) categories. The hotel’s vibrant signature color is carried through to rooms with bold fuchsia feature walls and bed runners with charcoal grey bedspreads. These are offset with crisp white walls, dark wooden furniture, and terra-cotta tiled flooring. Rooms are spacious, contemporary, and minimalist -- so there’s plenty of room for luggage. Flat-screen TVs, plush armchairs or seats, work desks (in some rooms), and decent-sized closets are provided. Irons and ironing boards are available on request, and free Wi-Fi is included, but there's no coffee/tea facilities or in-room safes. Bathrooms are tiled in all white with blue and yellow trim, and feature walk-in showers, plus free individual toiletries. Note that some lower-level rooms can lack light.
Features
A breakfast restaurant, function rooms, and free Wi-Fi -- but not much else
There's little in the way of features at Hotel Del Marquesado, although a few basics are covered. The restaurant Terrace “La Fuente” is open for breakfast, and there are two spacious function rooms on offer. Guests have access to a computer inside the small reception area; free Wi-Fi is provided throughout; and laundry and dry cleaning services are available. A safe can be used on request at reception, and free self parking is available as well.
