Bottom Line

The four-pearl, 27-room Quinta Real Huatulco is a secluded boutique hotel with a vibe that's both casual and exclusive at the same time. Situated high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean, views here can be astounding. However, it's a 10-minute walk to the golden sands of Tangolunda Beach, or a two-minute shuttle ride provided by the hotel. Rooms are spacious and fresh, with free Wi-Fi, minibars, and air-conditioning. Many include breezy private terraces or private pools -- the best have stunning ocean views. With two restaurants, two infinity pools, and two bars, it’s a tranquil and romantic option for couples and families, though explicitly kid-friendly features are few. The nearby sister resort, Camino Real Zaashila, offers similar amenities in a more affordable package with a closer beach.

Scene

Breezy and modern boutique hotel with a relaxed, laid-back vibe

Perched high up on a hill, the Quinta Real Huatulco feels exclusive and sophisticated, though at its heart this is a breezy and relaxed escape. That laid-back vibe starts right away, as you wind your way up a steep hill behind a private gate, and is amplified as you start making your way across the grounds on foot. The open-concept lobby extends out onto a terrace to provide what is arguably one of this hotel's best features: stunning views of Tangolunda Bay and the surrounding town. Given its small size, this is an intimate property that's a fine alternative to the big resorts found closer to the shoreline (which is a 10-minute walk from the hotel). During the day, the Beach Club is where most of the socializing happens, though the restaurant can fill up during the breakfast rush. Later in the day, the hotel restaurant's terrace becomes a prime sunset viewing spot, helping to give this hotel its romantic flair. While you'll see a mix of couples and families here, the hotel is better suited for the former as there aren't too many kid-specific amenities to be found, aside from the pool and beach.

Location

A 10-minute walk to Tangolunda, and 10 minutes by car to La Crucecita

Situated on a quiet hillside in Tangolunda, the Quinta Real Huatulco is near the beach, but not directly on it. Getting there requires a 10-minute downhill walk, though the hotel also runs a shuttle to its beach club, which only takes a couple of minutes. The restaurants and shops in downtown La Crucecita are 10 minutes away by car, including the Super Che (a massive department store). The hotel is also a 10-minute drive to Santa Cruz, a touristy collection of bars, markets, and restaurants. For nature lovers, Huatulco National Park is a 15-minute drive away and features over 700 species of birds as well as hiking trails. The town of Mazunte, one of Mexico's Pubelos Magicos and a major sea turtle breeding ground, takes around 75 minutes to reach by car. Huatulco International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Spacious and bright, all with terraces and many featuring private pools and ocean views

The rooms at the Quinta Real blow much of the competition out of the water on the merits of space alone. Even entry-level Master Suites are huge and include proper sitting areas. That fact aside, the style is an attractive mix of local, rustic, and modern details that come together to create a convincingly beachy Mexican atmosphere. Expect details like concrete floors with stone inlay patterns, woven palm panels, linen-hued textiles, local artwork, and wood-beamed ceilings. King or double beds are provided. Standard features include minibars, flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning, but no coffeemakers. The highlight of the rooms might be the terraces, many of which have hammocks and spectacular views of Tangolunda Bay. Of course, if you can spring for it, the rooms with private pools are a treat. We also liked little touches, like turndown service with Lindt chocolates. Bathrooms are spacious and well-appointed, with large vanities, hairdryers, plus jetted shower/tub combos or separate jetted tubs and walk-in showers.

Features

Beach club and infinity pools, plus Mexican dining and bar with great ocean views

Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the hotel is a 10-minute walk to the beach, though there's a shuttle service in both directions as well. Down at the beach, there are a handful of thatched sun shades with lounge chairs, small tables, and rope hammocks. Beach service is available. Tangolunda Beach is quieter compared to what's found closer to town, though it is still technically open to the public. The beach club is where you'll find the hotel's two infinity pools, as well as a pool bar and a lunch restaurant. Keep in mind that the pools aren't huge, and can get busy when lots of families are staying at the hotel.Back at the hotel proper, Las Cupulas is the dining option for breakfast and dinner. The Mexican breakfast includes local items like Oaxacan hot chocolate and chilaquiles, while dinner becomes a more international, seafood-heavy affair. Room service is available throughout the day. The lobby bar and Sky Lounge are both open at night, and the latter overlooks the Pacific Ocean for excellent sunset views.Unfortunately, the hotel lacks a spa or a fitness center, which is surprising for a property of this caliber. The hotel has a handful of shops in the lobby selling snacks, jewelry, and beachwear. Self- and valet parking are both available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, though it can be spotty in some areas.
