Cozy, traditionally decorated rooms offer minibars and good soundproofing. The common areas are equally classic in decor, with gilt-framed mirrors and oil paintings. Wi-Fi is free, but there is a fee for breakfast.
Scene
Small old-world hotel
Leather-covered Queen Anne chairs fill the slightly sedate lobby at the Hotel de Varenne. The interior architecture reflects the style of the 19th century building, with panel molding and marble floors. Gilt-framed mirrors and oil paintings adorn the walls. Apart from these aesthetic details, the common areas are somewhat bland. The overall atmosphere is peaceful and relaxed, especially in the pretty courtyard.
Location
Near the Invalides and the Seine, with the Eiffel Tower in walking distance
Hotel de Varenne is situated in a quiet neighborhood a few minutes' walk from the Seine, a five-minute walk to the monument Les Invalides (which contains Napoleon’s remains and the city’s Army museum), and a 25-minute walk to the Eiffel Tower. There is a small independent cinema, La Pagode, a few blocks from the hotel. The area has the occasional bakery and grocery; for a plethora of commerce, visitors can stroll about 20 minutes to the Saint-Germain-des-Prés area, or up to the neighborhood around the Tour Montparnasse, where travelers can also catch an airport shuttle (one hour and 15 minutes door to door, with two stops on the metro and using a private shuttle service). The nearest metro stops are St François-Xavier, Rue du Bac, and Solférino; all are within seven minutes on foot.
Rooms
Traditionally decorated rooms with dark wood furniture and floral textiles
Wrought-iron double sconce lights, textiles and carpeting in deep jewel tones, and dark wood furniture make for a traditional aesthetic in rooms that are otherwise fairly plain, with a small framed print or photograph here and there. All rooms have air-conditioning, bathrobe and slippers, a minibar, a Lavazza coffeemaker, a safe, and a desktop flat-screen TV; larger rooms have iPod docks with sound systems. Bathrooms, tiled in nondescript peach marble, have a shower/tub combo. Generally guests have commented that beds are comfortable and that soundproofing is good.
Features
A peaceful garden with wrought iron tables and chairs
The hotel’s main feature is a peaceful, brick-lined garden filled with potted topiary, stone statuettes, and wrought iron tables and cushioned chairs. There is a breakfast room just off the lobby area where visitors can take a morning meal for a fee.
