Bottom Line

Situated near bustling Place de la République in the 11th arrondissement, the three-pearl Marais HÔme Hotel aims to provide a boutique experience for less expensive rates. Its 33 small contemporary-style rooms fulfill guests’ basic needs with a splash of decorative oomph. The Haussmannian property also scores bonus points for having a free fitness room -- a rarity in a petite Parisian property -- along with a sauna, steam room, and massage room, each of which charge an hourly fee. That said, guests willing to forgo them in favor of better-appointed rooms with added amenities may want to up their budget and book into the nearby Hotel Gabriel Paris Marais instead.

Scene

For cost-conscious travelers who want a degree of style without compromising location

Housed in a typical Haussmannian building, the Marais HÔme Hotel appeals to a broad range of travelers by offering affordable, mid-range accommodations and bumping them up a notch with the addition of contemporary style and some unexpected extras -- among them a fitness room and wellness facilities. The lobby, a study in tans and taupes, has exposed beams and old stone walls that are contrasted by funky lighting and comfortable, sometimes colorful, contemporary seating. A little Nespresso bar is stocked with free beverages, available to guests along with free English-language newspapers. Directly off the lobby, a furnished inner courtyard gives a place to kick back and breathe fresh air, and a terrace up on the sixth floor achieves the same end while also providing rooftop views of the city. Guests can also convene in the vaulted basement, where a buffet breakfast is served each morning for an added fee.

Location

An enviable urban setting close to the Place de la République and prominent sights

Set on a busy boulevard lined with 19th-century Haussmannian buildings, this hotel occupies a convenient (and quiet) location just off popular Place de la République. Because it sits on the edge of the Marais District, it's walking distance to both a bevy of bars and eateries and multiple museums -- most notably the Pompidou Center and the recently revamped Musée Picasso Paris. Trendsetters will also find themselves within walking distance of the up-and-coming Canal Saint-Martin and Oberkampf areas. Rental bikes, part of Paris’ Vélib program, are available right outside the front door, plus the hotel is less than five minutes on foot from a trio of metro stations (République, Oberkampf and Filles de Calvaire).- Two-minute walk to the République metro station

  • 10-minute walk to Musée Picasso Paris
  • 14-minute walk to Musée Carnavalet
  • 19-minute walk to the Pompidou Center
  • 20-minute walk to Canal Saint-Martin
  • 11 minutes to Gare Du Nord (Eurostar) via public transport
  • 18 minutes to the Louvre Museum via public transport
  • 21-minute drive to Orly Airport
  • 24 minutes to Notre Dame Cathedral via public transport
  • 28 minutes to the Arc de Triomphe via public transport
  • 31-minute drive to Charles de Gaulle International Airport
  • 38 minutes to the Eiffel Tower via public transport

Rooms

A range of comfortable but compact rooms with contemporary flourishes

Renovated in 2013, the Marais HÔme Hotel offers compact, air-conditioned double rooms that are notably clean and, considering the location, surprisingly quiet. They are also undeniably small: Only the Duplexes and Junior Suite exceed 205 square-feet. The upside is that large windows (which occasionally open onto balconies or terraces) lend the rooms lots of natural light and help belie their actual size. Curved or beamed ceilings and upholstered headboards with matching coverlets -- some quilted, some in faux fur -- inject an element of contemporary style; otherwise the furnishings are best described as functional but flimsy. Each of the rooms features a flat-screen TV with satellite channels, coffee/tea-making equipment, and free Wi-Fi. Tiled bathrooms contain sleek sinks, stylish toilets and, in some cases, sizable tubs with removable rainfall showerheads. Classic, Superior and certain Deluxe-class Rooms have a shower only, while the Duplexes boast a shower downstairs and a sensuous slipper tub upstairs beside the bed. Guests who upgrade to a Duplex also get a rather Spartan sitting area, complete with sofa-bed and second TV, which is connected to the loft-style sleeping area via a mod spiral staircase. The single-level Junior Suite on the top floor (the hotel’s largest option) includes a similarly outfitted sitting area as well as a balcony that fronts the boulevard and gives distant views of Sacré-Coeur.

Features

Surprising perks such as a fitness room and pay-for-use wellness facilities

This hotel’s best features are in the basement -- starting with the free fitness room. Equipped with a treadmill, exercise bikes and weights, it may be basic by North American standards but is a welcome extra here. There’s also a spacious sauna and steam room, both with an hourly usage fee, plus a treatment room where massages are available by appointment. You’ll find a breakfast room downstairs, too. The add-on buffet served there daily promises a nice selection of fresh hot and cold items in addition to the requisite baked goods. A furnished main level courtyard and a sixth-floor terrace, where guests can enjoy a rooftop view of the city (and a BYOB beverage), provide alternative public spaces.Other perks include free Wi-Fi, room service, a dry cleaning/laundry service and a 24-hour front desk with a friendly staff and “digital concierge” (read: iPad). Small pets are welcome (for a fee), as are children (each room can accommodate one under the age of three for free). Cribs can be requested; however, setting one up in an already small room can prove challenging.
