Bottom Line

The Villa Royale is
an upper-middle-range hotel with a Baroque style and views of
Sacre-Coeur and Montmartre. Thirty-one exuberantly colorful guest rooms have minibars, flat-screen TVs, and bathrobes. Many rooms have excellent views of Montmartre and Sacré-Coeur while some have
balconies, jetted tubs, and fireplaces. Some rooms pick up street noise. Room service is available, but has limited hours, and
breakfast is only included with certain rooms. The Moulin Rouge is a five-minute walk away, though some guests may be put off by the hotel's proximity to the many sex shops and adult-oriented entertainment in the area. For rooms in the trendy Marais area of Paris, guests should try Le Relais du Marais, where rooms will be small but rates may be less expensive.

Scene

Baroque hotel with views of Sacre-Coeur and Montmartre

A memorable, Baroque style covers the Villa Royale from ceiling to carpets. The hotel includes tufted velvet
furniture and decorations, patterned carpets, painted tray ceilings, and
detailed light fixtures. The small, cozy lobby has an interesting light fixture
over the tiny front desk and large oil paintings on the walls. Red damask print
chairs have gold trim. Thick drapes in red
tones are accented with tassels and walls are lined with intricate wallpapers and moldings. Patterned chairs, damask print tablecloths, and yellow tile adorn
the over-the-top breakfast area, which is saturated in reds. Mood lighting and
crown molding also decorate the space. A comfortable, luxe lounge has dark
purple tufted armchairs for softness and large oil paintings on the walls.
Hallways have more red patterned carpet with red velvet walls and tufted blue
inserts in the elevators. Guests, mostly couples on vacation, have exceptional views of Sacre-Coeur and Montmartre
from many areas of the hotel.

Location

On Place Pigalle, a slightly seedy entertainment district near Montmartre

The Villa Royale is on the
Place Pigalle, with the Moulin Rouge and metro a
five-minute walk away, plus restaurants and shops right out the hotel's front door. The Place de Clichy, Place du Tertre, and Sacred Heart
Basilica are a 10-minute walk from the hotel while Theatre Mogador, Galeries
Lafayette, Sacre-Coeur, and Montmartre are a 15-minute walk away. The Paris
Opera, Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, Tuileries Garden, and Paris Olympia are a
10-minute drive from the hotel, or about 20 minutes by metro. Plan on around a 30 to 45-minute drive to Charles de Gaulle Airport, or up to an hour to reach Orly Airport depending on traffic. Note that this hotel is in one of Paris’ red light districts, and the adult-oriented entertainment in the area may be an … um … turn off for some guests.

Rooms

Antique and quirky design, some rooms with exceptional city views

Cozy, unabashedly Baroque, exuberantly colorful rooms feature quirky design elements, from the bold wallpaper to the pillows to the bedspreads. It's a style some will find romantic and others will find a bit over the top. The Jean Marais Room, for example, has red
drapes and patterned carpet and there are heavily-decorated
reading lights accented with rhinestones. Antique-style furniture adorns all rooms and there are flat-screen TVs mounted on the walls. Air-conditioning, minibars, safes, and free newspapers are provided. Many rooms have
exceptional views of Montmartre and Sacre-Coeur, and some have balconies
and fireplaces. However, carpets and furniture can look worn, and
some rooms pick up loud street noise from the surrounding lively area. Modern
green or neutral tile bathrooms are large and offer nice extras like heated towel racks and bathrobes. Green or neutral marble vanities, mirrors with gold frames, and
makeup mirrors adorn the space, and all bathrooms feature light tile shower/tub combos or showers. Some
bathrooms have double sinks while Suites have jetted tubs. Toiletries
are provided.
