Bottom Line

The three-pearl Hyatt Place Pittsburgh-North Shore is popular among families, couples, and business travelers due to its location between two of Pittsburgh’s popular professional sports arenas, PNC Park and Heinz Field. Highlights include free daily buffet breakfasts, a small indoor pool, fitness center, and free Wi-Fi. The 178 suites have the standard Hyatt Place layout, plus features like flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and pullout sofas -- but they look a little dated and dark. On-site parking costs a fee, though that’s not uncommon for the area. For a similar hotel nearby, SpringHill Suites North Shore is a slightly cheaper option with an on-site restaurant.

Hyatt Place Pittsburgh-North Shore

Scene

Chain hotel that draws in sports fans and business travelers

Hyatt Place Pittsburgh-North Shore is an inviting, warm hotel with a clientele that tends to be either sports fans or business travelers with work in the area. The lobby has contemporary furniture in warm hues of orange, tan, green, and gold. The front desk doubles as a snack, coffee, and cocktail bar and there’s multiple booths, armchairs, and tables as the lobby is also the dining area during breakfast. Modern artwork includes red vases and back-lit wood branches placed in pebbles. Overall, the hotel has a contemporary style, though it's starting to look a little worn along the edges.

Location

Between two sports stadiums and close to downtown Pittsburgh

Hyatt Place Pittsburgh North-Shore sits next to I-279 and is conveniently placed between two professional sports venues. It’s across the street from PNC Park, the baseball stadium for the Pittsburgh Pirates, and it's an eight-minute walk to Heinz Field, home of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Consol Energy Center, the hockey arena for the NHL Penguins, isn’t too far either -- only a 10-minute walk away. There are multiple dining options on surrounding streets. Rivers Casino is a 16-minute walk away, while Fort Duquesne takes 10 minutes to reach on foot. The Carnegie Science Center is an 11-minute walk along the Allegheny River, and downtown Pittsburgh takes 15 minutes on foot or a five-minute drive. There’s a metro stop that’s a three-minute walk away. Pittsburgh International Airport is a 25-minute drive from the hotel. The hotel has a free shuttle to points of interest within three miles, but there’s a daily fee for parking that includes in-and-out privileges -- this is quite normal for the area.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with mini-fridges, pullout couches, and flat-screen TVs

There's little to distinguish these rooms, Studio Suites, from any other Hyatt Place. Overall, rooms are a bit dark with small windows and a color palette of brown, gold, and beige that's similar to the lobby's. The layout is spacious, however, with room dividers separating the bedroom and living room areas, each of which is set with a pullout couch, desk, and cabinet with a sink and mini-fridge. Standard amenities include free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs that swivel, and single-serving coffeemakers. Some rooms have views of PNC Stadium. Basic bathrooms feature granite sinks, blue walls, and shower/tub combos. Free toiletries and hairdryers are provided. On the downside, some past complaints have been made about cleanliness issues and unpleasant odors.

Features

Indoor pool, fitness center, and free breakfast

For a mid-range property, this Hyatt Place has a solid range of amenities, including an indoor pool and a fitness center with cardio machines and free weights. These facilities are small, but they’re clean and do the trick for short-term stays. For food, Hyatt Place Pittsburgh-North Shore features a free breakfast with hot and cold items each morning, though guests have mixed reviews about the quality. There’s also 24-hour room service and grab-'n'-go food items like sandwiches and salads at the front desk. Beyond free coffee in the lobby each day, the front desk doubles as a bar that serves Starbucks specialty coffees, wines, beers, and cocktails. For business travelers, there are four meeting rooms, and a business center in the lobby has two computers and a printer. Wi-Fi is free, and this is a dog-friendly property.
