Bottom Line

The 25-room Copper King Lodge offers couples, families, and ski enthusiasts a budget, no-frills vacation directly on the Red River with prime trout fishing and direct access to an area chair lift. The property also features a charming terrace with a hot tub, picnic tables, and grills -- all with waterfront views. Cabin-style rooms have kitchens, fireplaces, flat-screen TVs, and balconies. The hotel doesn’t have a restaurant, however. If that’s a major concern, the nearby Black Mountain Lodge has on-site dining.

Motel property that suits both families and couples

Copper King Lodge is a cozy, cabin-themed motel that blends in with the ski town and lush pine forest surroundings, suiting families and couples. The beautiful Red River -- offering prime rainbow trout fishing -- runs behind the property. Charming hand-carved wooden benches are provided at every turn along with signage, statuary, and totems. The nearby ski lift is also visible from the lodge. The office is quaint, featuring a wooden front desk and large windows that provide a lot of natural light.

On the banks of the Red River, near an array of attractions

The Copper King is conveniently located in the town of Red River and near the Copper Chair Lift. Motels, restaurants, bars, and hiking trails are within walking distance and the Red River itself runs right by the lodge. The Red River Ski Area -- in the Southern Rockies -- is a nine-minute walk northwest while Carson National Forest is more than an hour’s drive west. Other nearby attractions include Red River Community House, Red River Conference Center, and Bobcat Pass Wilderness Adventures. Taos Pueblo, a famed Native-American historical landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a 48-minute drive south.

Large rooms with cabin decor, Southwestern fabrics, and riverfront porches

Guests can choose from a variety of room categories, ranging from motel units to three-bedroom rooms and suites. Knotty pine walls, hand-carved wooden furniture, and Southwestern textiles give rooms a cabin feel. Features include flat-screen TVs, DVD players, fireplaces, mini-fridges or full refrigerators, and microwaves. There’s no air-conditioning and furnishings in some spaces are outdated (the patterned, motel-quality comforters in particular will not suit all tastes). Kitchenettes or full kitchens with the works are in upgraded rooms.

Bathrooms are basic with shower/tub combos and modern fixtures. Some only have showers. Wooden furnished patios offer stunning views of the river. Views of the mountains and/or ski lift are also available.

Lawn games, picnic tables, and barbecue grills

A walkway with wooden planks leads from the hotel to the lawn that sits right on the Red River, an area surrounded by lovely forests. Lawns offer riverfront and mountain views from picnic tables, swings, and a paved walking path that runs along the water. There are also family-friendly activities like horseshoe lawn games and charcoal and gas grills for barbecuing. A secured cabin terrace with a locked fence has a hot tub that overlooks the river banks and provides a perfect opportunity for wildlife watching. Fresh towels are provided on the deck. Wi-Fi and parking at the lodge are free.
