Bottom Line

The 48-room Promenade Visconti is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel that's only a block from Ipanema Beach. Guests can walk to the shore in a couple of minutes, and there are almost countless restaurants, shops, and bars nearby. Rooms are spacious and modern, although rather plain, and all include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, and minibars. Balconies come standard too, but some are tiny. We also spotted some wear in bathrooms. Larger suites have kitchenettes with sinks and microwaves, and balconies are larger and furnished. Breakfast is free, but that's the only meal served on-site. The pool and fitness center are small and dated, but most guests are here for the beach action anyway. As an alternative, the nearby Ipanema Inn has similar rates and a restaurant that serves all meals.

Scene

Simple little hotel most notable for its central location near the beach

This is a simple little hotel that isn't particularly noteworthy except for its central location in a popular spot. It's small and cozy, with limited public spaces. The lobby has a couple of cushy sofas where guests can hang out if they need, and the breakfast area is adjacent. Otherwise, most travelers are out and about all day. The clientele is a mix of tourists and businesspeople from Brazil and abroad, who come here to take advantage of the excellent location and reasonable rates.

Location

A block from Ipanema Beach, close to shopping, dining, and nightlife

This hotel is situated in a quiet, residential area, one block from Ipanema Beach. Guests can walk to the shore in about two minutes, and there are lots of restaurants, shops, and bars in the area. The Nossa Senhora da Paz  Metro station is a short walk from the hotel, and buses also stop nearby. It's a 10-minute walk to the LGBT section of the beach, Praia Farme. Lively Copacabana is about a 20-minute walk from the hotel, or six to 10 minutes by car or public transportation. Leblon Beach also can be reached in about 20 minutes on foot. Corcovado Mountain, where the Christ the Redeemer statue is found, is about a 35-minute drive, or an hour and 10 minutes by public transportation. Sugarloaf Mountain can be reached in about a half-hour drive, or a little over an hour by public transportation. Plan on at least 35 minutes to reach the city's international airport by car, or a little over an hour by public transportation.

Rooms

Spacious and simple, with flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and balconies

Rooms and suites are spacious, and all have balconies, although some are quite small. Larger balconies are furnished with a table and chairs. Decor is modern, but simple, with hardwood floors, dark wood furniture, leather tub chairs and benches at the foot of the beds, and neutral color schemes of gray and beige. Amenities in all rooms include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi. Some have kitchenettes with sinks and microwaves, plus dining and sitting areas. Bathrooms feature granite countertops, hairdryers, toiletries, magnifying mirrors, and showers. Unfortunately, we spotted maintenance issues such as mildew stains and peeling paint in some of the bathrooms that we visited. Keep in mind that rooms overlooking the street are likely to pick up traffic and street noise.

Features

Free breakfast buffet, small pool, fitness center, steam room, meeting rooms, and free Wi-Fi

Features are limited at this little hotel. A free breakfast buffet is provided and includes fruits, juices, cereals, breads, yogurt, and eggs. A tiny pool in the basement is good for a dip, but not much else. A few lounge chairs are available for guests who'd like to relax poolside, but the space isn't particularly attractive. Most guests opt for the nearby beach instead. The small fitness center has a stationary bike, treadmill, elliptical machine, and free weights, but the equipment is all dated. There's also a steam room. Two rooms are available for meetings, and W-Fi is free throughout. Parking is available for a fee.
