  • Grand lobby area

  • Superior Rooms are clean and spacious

  • Free shuttle bus service to airport

  • Fast, free Wi-Fi

  • Within walking distance of the Trevi Fountain

  • Small hotel bar

Cons
  • Tiny bathrooms with shower stalls in Standard Rooms

  • Not all rates include breakfast

Bottom Line

The 130-room Exe International Palace is located about halfway between Termini Station and the Trevi Fountain. It is advertised as a four-star hotel, but priced (and decorated) like a mid-range property. Superior Rooms are more spacious than their Standard Room counterparts, which have cramped bathrooms with tiny shower stalls. The nearby Hotel Rex has more property features as well as free breakfast, but it's five minutes closer to Termini Station (and five minutes farther from the tourist center). All in all, Exe offers solid value for the location, particularly when you take the free Wi-Fi and free airport shuttle into account.

Scene

A historic hotel with impressive common spaces but bland rooms

The hotel is housed in a historic neoclassical building and many of the public spaces maintain their original style; frescoes, gilded moldings, pillars, and vaulted ceilings abound in the lobby. The spacious breakfast room and tiny bar corner have a more modern aesthetic, though guests should note that the opening hours are limited for both.

Location

Halfway between Termini Station and Trevi Fountain

Exe International Palace is very centrally located between Piazza della Repubblica and Piazza Venezia, on a street bustling with shops, cafes and restaurants. It’s just blocks from Termini train station and within walking distance of several tourist sights -- specifically, it's a five-minute walk to the Rome Opera House and a 15-minute walk to the Trevi Fountain.

Rooms

Bigger and more contemporary Superior Rooms are worth the upgrade.

Room decor varies drastically between room types: Standard Rooms are cramped and dated with tiny bathrooms (the small shower stall is a major drawback). Superior Rooms have much more space and are more modern in style, but the decor is still bland. Picture brown bedding, wood floors, and bare white walls. Though the hotel is on a busy block, the double-pane glass windows block out almost all of the street noise. Some rooms face an unappealing internal courtyard.

Features

A small bar and a free airport shuttle

Exe lacks spa treatments and a fitness center, as do many hotels in Rome -- even those advertised as four stars. The hotel’s restaurant serves above-average fare (especially the breakfast, which is included in some rates) and the small bar area is modern, but both have limited hours of operation. The free shuttle provided to and from the airport is a notable plus, as is the fast, free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
