Bottom Line

The 28-room, upper-middle-range Village Inn and Pub is a bed and breakfast built in a 1930s beach cottage, designed around the property’s ancient oak trees. Guest rooms are clustered around a small courtyard pool, with exterior hallways and picturesque wrought-iron balconies. The Pub is a laid-back local nightspot, frequented by guests and regularls, whose specialty is Wild Orchid Martinis. Guest rooms and common areas are furnished with 1930s-era antiques, but the amenities are modern, and beds are super comfortable. Free Wi-Fi, continental breakfast, and parking helps keep costs low.

Village Inn and Pub

Scene

Ancient oak trees, 1930s decor, a stone fireplace, and friendly English-style pub

The Village Inn and Pub is a tiny gem, a 1930s beach cottage expanded into a bed and breakfast, built around a group of ancient live oak trees. The reception and breakfast areas, sitting room, and English pub are in the original cottage, where the original stone fireplace is the focal point of the property. The owners have taken care, in their choice of design and furniture, to celebrate the area and era. Each guest room is named for an historic figure who had an impact on St. Simons Island in some way, and rooms incorporate photographs and mementos of their namesakes.

The Village Pub features a solid mahogany bar imported from England, a cluster of leather chairs in front of the fireplace, and a signature drink: the Wild Orchid Martini. Locals and guests gather here in the evening for conversation and, on certain nights, live music. There is no menu, but guests are welcome to bring in food or pizza from the restaurant across the street. A simple breakfast, which includes waffles, is served in a bright side room furnished with heavy oak tables, an antique sideboard, and leather chairs. Lovely French doors let in lots of light, and the wood floors look original.

Spacious, clean, and bright, with a dose of local history

Rooms are the real highlight at the Village Inn and Pub. Each is spacious, clean and fresh, with high ceilings and 1930s-era furniture. Each charming guest room is named for a historic figure who impacted St. Simons Island history, and there are photographs and mementoes of rooms’ namesakes on the walls. The rooms are painted a soft green, with pretty white woodwork and plantation shutters that add atmosphere. Leather armchairs are of obvious quality. Beds are super comfortable, and Turkish cotton towels in the bathrooms feel luxurious. Some rooms have private patios or small wrought iron balconies with courtyard views. Street side rooms can be a little noisy, and there is no elevator to the second floor.

Features

Pretty pool, free Continental breakfast, and an English pub

The Village Inn and Pub offers free continental breakfast each morning on the sun porch, overlooking the pool. Breakfast consists of simple foods, more like a chain hotel meal than a homemade B&B-style feast, but there is a waffle iron set-up and coffee provided in the lobby throughout the day. The pub doesn't serve food but is has a full bar and offers a relaxed, friendly spot to gather and socialize with the locals and other guests, with live music offered some evenings. The courtyard pool isn't large, but it is peaceful and secluded, perfect for a splash on a hot St. Simons afternoon. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
