Located on a busy main road in downtown Salzburg, the Zum Hirschen Hotel occupies a square, flat-roofed building that blends with the area's architecture. With pale yellow facade, white trim detailing, ground-floor window boxes, and a carpeted stairway entrance, the hotel offers a stylish welcome for guests. The interior decor is a lively but tasteful combination of traditional and contemporary elements with fresh white walls, bright modern accents, and rich wood furniture and architectural accents. The lobby is bright with inset lighting, and marbled tile floors balance well with heavier wood accents, such as a wood reception desk, doors, and wall molding. A striped chaise lounge couch sits across from the reception desk, and it's topped with bright pink and green pillows marked with the hotel’s trademark deer print. The nearby lounge and seating areas offer an eclectic mix of furniture ranging from pink armchairs to green couches. While pleasant on the whole, some guests find the decor dated. The hotel is frequented by families and couples sightseeing in Salzburg. 

The Zum Hirschen Hotel is located on a busy main road in downtown Salzburg. While the street outside has a few shops and eateries, it’s not in a prominent tourist area, though it’s only a five-minute walk from Salzburg’s central station and an eight-minute walk from Mirabell Place. Guests who enjoy walking can get to many tourist attractions in 25 minutes or less on foot (eight minutes or less by car), including Mozart’s Birthplace, the popular old town historic area, the Salzburg Festival, and Hohensalzburg Fortress. Salzburg Airport is 20 minutes from the hotel via public transportation. Those arriving in Salzburg by car will find a large parking lot behind the hotel.

Rooms at the Zum Hirschen Hotel offer simple decor with traditional wood elements. Sleek hardwood floors, fresh white walls, chestnut-brown wood furniture (including a hefty wood wardrobe), and candelabra-style sconce lighting add to the basic but attractive look. Some guests find the decor tasteful, while others feel it's old-fashioned. Rooms range in size, with Double Rooms, Suites, and two-bedroom Family Rooms that are perfect for parents and kids. All rooms have air-conditioning, coffee and tea service, flat screen TVs (with some English channels), safes, mini-fridges with free bottled water, and free Wi-Fi. Rooms are finished with a chocolate on each pillow. Bathrooms are spacious, with pink-tinged tiled walls, hairdryers, and glass-doored showers with wall-mounted hair-and-body-wash dispensers and individual lotion toiletries. Some rooms also have bathtubs. 

The hotel has a charming large back patio with umbrellaed seating, manicured trees, and central fountain -- though the patio is essentially sitting in the middle of the parking lot. Rental bikes are also available from here. The hotel has a small bar in the lobby, and an attached Zum Hirschenwirt restaurant, which is not officially a part of the hotel. The restaurant features traditional Austrian decor and food, but some guests complain that it has limited hours and an unchanging menu. A breakfast buffet is also served here and offers a smorgasbord of breads, cereals, and pastries -- guests tend to find it satisfying but pricey. The upper floor contains two saunas, a Turkish bath, and a gym.
