The two-and-a-half-pearl Holiday Inn Express & Suites San Antonio Medical Center North lives up to the standards of its parent company, with a convenient location off the highway and inexpensive, clean rooms. The design throughout is modern, thanks to renovations in 2015. The 122 simply decorated rooms have microwaves, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges. Free Wi-Fi and free breakfast with hot items add value, as does an outdoor pool and small gym. There are some chain restaurants and stores in the immediate area, plus the Medical Center, USAA headquarters, and The University of Texas at San Antonio are all within a 10-minute drive. Tourists sights like the River Walk and Alamo are roughly a 25-minute drive. Travelers wanting to be nearer these tourist attractions should consider the Hampton Inn downtown.
Scene
Modern and efficient, renovated in 2015
Popular with both business and leisure travelers, this Holiday Inn Express is modern and efficient, largely due to renovations in 2015. The lobby breaks from corporate banality with a bright blue statement wall and lots of geometric patterns in the carpet, artwork, and couch upholstery. However, most spaces have a generic earth-tone palette of orange and brown. Although guests are generally exploring the city's attractions or at nearby medical and corporate centers, an outdoor pool with a waterfall feature gives the property a lovely resort-like feel.
Location
Located directly off the interstate, close to corporate headquarters
Located just off the west I-10 freeway, the hotel isn't in the prettiest spot, but it's convenient for those going to Six Flags Fiesta Texas (10 minutes by car), visiting family or friends at the University of Texas San Antonio (six minutes), or San Antonio Medical Center (a seven- to 10-minute drive away), or looking for a budget spot to stay while seeing San Antonio. For business travelers, it's also close to the Valero headquarters (three minutes by car), USAA (nine minutes), and FBI (six minutes). The airport is about 12 minutes away by taxi. Across the highway is Huebner Oaks shopping center, which is packed with brand-name stores, chain and local eateries, and a movie theater. Downtown tourist attractions like the Alamo and River Walk are at least a 25-minute drive from the property. A car is essential for this location, and there's free parking on-site.
Rooms
Rooms are modern and well-equipped
Rooms are generic, albeit contemporary, with warm orange tones in the bed runners and chain-like artwork on the walls, plus dark-wood furniture and floors. Comfy beds have Serta mattresses, and little touches like blackout blinds, USB ports for charging on the desks, and dimmed lighting are well-received. Amenities are excellent, and include microwaves, mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, 42-inch flat-screen TVs, and ironing facilities, but no safes. Decent-sized bathrooms have shower/tub combos, toiletries, and hairdryers. An app is available to make housekeeping requests such as extra towels. There's also free Wi-Fi and wired internet connections. Unfortunately, some guests have complained of noise from the adjacent highway.
Features
Excellent free breakfast and outdoor pool
This Holiday Inn lacks a restaurant and bar, but it does provide free, quality breakfasts each morning. It consists of the standard American continental fare, plus hot items like cinnamon rolls, oatmeal, and pancakes. An outdoor pool is pleasant and fairly big, featuring a waterfall and section for kids. It's open from March until December, but it's unheated. A small gym is available with limited cardio equipment, free weights, strength machines, and some nice extras like Bosu balls and resistance bands. There's a computer available, as well as copying, printing, and faxing services. A meeting room is available that can hold up to 40 people. Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. A small convenience store sells food and sundries.
