Cons
  • Outdated decor

  • Shabby furniture

  • Small, claustrophobic indoor pool is depressing compared to other area rooftop pools

Bottom Line

Just from looking at the facade of downtown Santiago’s 233-room Hotel Plaza San Francisco, you can tell that it is an old property. Step inside and the European-style decor starts to feel more blatantly outdated than purposely retro or vintage. The adequately sized rooms -- full of rich fabrics and woods -- seem clean and comfortable, and come with a number of amenities, but overall could use some remodeling and modernization. The free Wi-Fi tends to be unreliable, a major drawback for business travelers (though the hotel’s 3,000-plus square feet of meeting and event space is a plus). For a decent meal, there is the acclaimed Bristol Restaurant that specializes in Chilean flavors, and for nearby sightseeing, Plaza de Armas and La Moneda Palace are within walking distance.

Location

Located in downtown Santiago, a short walk to many main attractions

The hotel is located on Avenida Libertador General Bernardo O’Higgins, popularly known as La Alameda. It is considered Santiago’s main thoroughfare and runs east to west throughout the city, with five lanes in each direction. It was named in honor of Bernardo O’Higgins, who, together with Jose de San Martin, helped Chile gain independence from Spain. Popular sights such as La Moneda Palace are within walking distance.Present day Santiago is a bustling, loud, ever-growing and ever-evolving metropolis populated with nearly seven million people. Aside from being the political and economic center of Chile, it is also fast becoming the country's hub for arts, entertainment, food and drink, and culture. The dynamic city is dotted with museums, theaters, bars, and different vibrant neighborhoods that cater to various crowds, such as the bohemian artists, culinary elite, and politicians. What makes this urban center especially unique is the fact that it's surrounded by the beautiful, glistening snow-capped Andes Mountains. Although Santiago has had a problem with smog and air pollution, it's still difficult not to be impressed by this stunning natural backdrop.- 31-minute drive to Santiago Arturo Merino Benitez Airport
