Bottom Line

Atlantis Hotel is an elegant, upper-middle-range landmark property dating back to the 1950s set in the bustling tourist center of Fira. It certainly ticks the boxes in regards to views, with the stunning caldera vistas viewable from its pool area, alfresco terrace, and most of its 25 rooms. While guest rooms are clean and modern, bathrooms are a little drab and some rooms are prone to both street and internal noise. Overall prices are competitive for a room with a view, though it's also worth comparing rates with the Astro Palace Hotel and Suites, which has a spa, and Tzekos Villas, where suites with hot tubs are available.

Atlantis Hotel

Scene

Historic landmark hotel with glamorous past and stunning caldera views

The Atlantis Hotel, so named because of speculation that the legendary lost city might have existed nearby, looks worthy of the utopian-inspired name at first glance. The all-white, split-level landmark hotel has been a prominent feature on the island since its opening in 1956 -- when it was one of few building that survived a massive earthquake. It has also hosted a raft of royalty and movie stars in its more glamorous years and, while the hotel is now more modest in its presentation, impressive architectural features such as vaulted double-height ceilings and marble staircases retain a sense of history and elegance. Fresh, clean interiors have a pleasant breezy color scheme, and polished tiled floors extend to a large alfresco terrace overlooking the breathtaking caldera view. However, the hotel might be relying a bit too heavily on its past reputation, and rooms are not up to advertised four-star standards.

Location

Stunning views from bustling central Fira center -- without steep steps

The hotel has a prime location on the southern end of central Fira, Santorini's capital. Its location means it's very much in the thick of the popular tourist hub with all of the town's restaurant, galleries, and boutiques within a short stroll. While some of the surrounding hubbub reaches inside the property, its setting overlooking the west cliffs guarantees spectacular views over the Aegean sea -- and without having to navigate any steep steps, as is common at other area properties. Santorini Airport is around 10 minutes away by road.

Rooms

Most of the clean and simple rooms offer caldera vistas -- but expect some noise.

Room decor is simple and unfussy for an advertised four-star hotel; expect generic wooden furniture, tile floors, and floor-to-ceiling drapery. All rooms are air conditioned and come with 28-inch flat-screen TVs, kettles, and minibars stocked with sodas, beer, water, and mini liquor bottles. Wi-Fi is free of charge though coverage can be patchy. All but three of the 25 rooms have either large windows or balconies featuring iconic caldera views and are certainly worth the extra outlay. Bathrooms are lackluster but clean with shower/tub combos, and all-natural Korres products -- robes and slippers are also provided. The location means some noise from the street, and the nearby church's bell, is inevitable and some guests have also reported internal noise issues.

Features

Cocktails by the pool and breakfast served around the clock

A rather unusual bonus is that the free breakfast can be served 24 hours a day. It includes a basic selection of orange juice, coffee, fruit, toast, jam, and choice of eggs (no yogurt). It can be taken in the breakfast hall -- with caldera views -- or on the guest room balcony. The oblong, semi-covered pool makes for a pleasant place to cool off with a cocktail, though sun loungers, and direct sunlight, can be limited. A lounge bar also serves drinks that can be take onto the terrace and accompanied by the Santorini's stunning backdrop. There is no spa, unlike at the Astro Palace Hotel and Suites.
