Some complaints about the concierge’s timeshare sales pitch
The lower-middle-range Sedona Ridge is just off Highway 179 in the Village of Oak Creek, with 118 rooms housed in 23 tan stucco buildings on a sprawling property. The red rocks are far from the Ridge, so views of them are limited, but good views exist of the surrounding desert landscape, especially from the two heated pools. Rooms have kitchenettes, but many guests will have to drive from the lobby to reach them. Guests wanting better views at a similar price point should consider the Bell Rock Inn.
Scene
Condo-style units on a sprawling property with limited red rock views
The Ridge is a sprawling property with 23 tan stucco buildings scattered along a network of streets and cul-de-sacs. Many rooms are located uphill from the lobby, so visitors will likely need to drive to their rooms after checking in. There are no elevators here -- a second-floor room will mean a climb up the stairs.Inside the lobby, there’s an activities center, business center, DVD library, and a coffee bar. A connecting room houses the spacious fitness center and its numerous machines. Outside, a stairway leads away from the lobby past the native stone walls up to the main pool. The views from the pool are very good, even if much of the view is dominated by high desert instead of red rocks.Farther uphill, the second pool offers more great views of the nearby desert. Guests will find a picnic area with tables and BBQ grills at the top of the hill at the property’s edge, and some views of red rocks. There’s no dining option on-site, or a spa, but several restaurants and spas are within a five-minute drive.
Location
On the Red Rock Scenic Byway, 7 miles south of Sedona in the Village of Oak Creek
The Ridge on Sedona is just off Highway 179, also known as the Red Rock Scenic Byway, in the southern part of the Village of Oak Creek. Like the name suggests, the hotel sits upon a ridge that is higher than most of the surrounding landscape. Although not owned by the same company, the Sedona Golf Resort and its 18-hole golf course are next door. Most visitors who drive to Sedona will pass through the Village of Oak Creek, which is seven miles south of Sedona. It’s not unusual to see cars pulled over at random places along the highway, as smitten gawkers stop to photograph the massive red and white sandstone formations that suddenly pop into view just before entering the Village (as it’s known to locals).Bell Rock, which is a five-minute drive away, is one of the most popular hiking and mountain biking areas in the Sedona region and draws hundreds of people each day. However, the pace of life in the Village is slower and quieter than in Sedona, and low-key travelers will appreciate the less hectic atmosphere.Guests may be intrigued to learn that the Sedona region was inhabited in the 1200s by the Sinagua Indians (“sin agua” is Spanish for “without water”), who left behind stone ruins, rock art paintings, and other evidence of their culture. Today, people can visit archeological sites tucked away in the Coconino National Forest (much of the surrounding landscape is National Forest) such as the V-Bar-V Petroglyph Site, which is only 15 minutes from the Ridge on Sedona. While the scenery and hiking here easily compares to Sedona, there are fewer dining and shopping options (though excellent restaurants in the Village, such as the Cucina Rustica, do exist). When visitors must leave, Sedona is only a spectacular 15-minute drive away. Don’t expect bustling nightlife in either Sedona or the Village -- after dark, the towns go to sleep.- 2-hour drive from Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
