This remote hotel located along the side of a highway is best for the relaxed traveler who doesn’t mind crowds or the occasional service inconsistency. The property is a good base for exploring the charms of the surrounding nature reserves of the region, including the national park surrounding Mount Etna, Europe’s most active volcano. The rooms here are basic and a bit dated, particularly when it comes to bedding and decor. The restaurant receives mixed reviews, including the criticism that the meals are repetitive and often derived from packaged goods. The hotel offers numerous public amenities, which are housed in '60s-era buildings or outdoor plazas that are scattered throughout the property's sprawling grounds.
Scene
Frequented by international tourists and families who do not mind the occasional quirk in exchange for the convenience of all-inclusive packages
The 380 rooms here are often filled by families traveling with children, and occasional older travelers. Guests who have commented favorably on the hotel’s offerings seem to not mind the occasional lapse in Wi-Fi service or inconsistencies with the food (such as unripe fruit on the dessert table). The grounds are sprawling and dotted with outdoor plazas, including a pleasant one with views of the Tyrrhenian Sea and the numerous nature reserves within driving distance of the property.
Location
Located along a highway in the desert, with no shops or restaurants nearby
The hotel is situated off a highway in an arid piece of landscape with views of the coastline. There are shuttle buses available both for the town of Cefalu and for the beach, though neither runs particularly late at night. Both destinations are too far to reach on foot (Cefalu is around four miles away and the beach is more than a mile away). There are no shops or restaurants near the hotel, and no public transportation link between the hotel and Cefalu. Day trips to La Rocca, Etna, and St Marco are all possible from the hotel, either by car or bus.
Rooms
Dated but mostly clean; some rooms have stunning views
Hotel Costa Verde’s rooms feature fairly dated bedding and colors -- some of the wood and wicker furniture is painted mallard green, for example. All rooms have small flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, safes, and air-conditioning; some guests have complained that the latter does not always function properly, and that the bathrooms are very small. The tiny balconies are a nice detail, as some offer breathtaking views. Noise from both inside and outside the hotel can be an issue in some rooms.
Features
Large outdoor restaurant and pool
The large restaurant receives some recurring complaints, including its early and inflexible breakfast schedule, and the packaged nature of some of its products. Overall it is considered adequate to good by most guests.
The car rental available at the hotel itself has historically been more expensive than the options offered within the town of Cefalu. Guests have noted that paying for extras at the hotel requires cash, and that the nearest ATM is in Cefalu, which is around four miles away.
A large pool overlooking the sea behind the hotel is a particular highlight. It has a shallow end for children, as well as an attractive water fountain in the center. The spa is also quite pretty and offers numerous amenities, including a small outdoor pool, a hot tub inside a cave, a sauna, and steam baths.
As expected from a hotel with an all-inclusive package available, there are numerous activities offered. The property features two tennis courts, a volleyball court, and an archery area. There is a also a decent-size gym with weight machines, cardio equipment, and free weights.
For the little ones, the hotel has a kids' club with a cheery, indoor play area that includes a ball pit.
There is also an open-air club and an outdoor theater, but some guests have complained that the nighttime entertainment is only in English.
