Bottom Line

MotherHome Guesthouse is one of three properties owned by MotherHome, and it is the most basic of the trio. Aimed at budget travelers, there are 26 basic rooms here that are simply decorated and include mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs. Breakfast is free, as is Wi-Fi. While the hotel is a 15-minute walk to Pub Street, there are plenty of restaurants and shops nearby on the east side of the Siem Reap River. Unlike the other MotherHome hotels, there is no pool, just a small restaurant and a massage room. The hotel is a decent value for Siem Reap, and is in a quiet spot, but travelers wanting an even easier walk to Pub Street should investigate the budget-friendly and colorful Golden Butterfly Villa.

Scene

Simple guesthouse with handsome, classic teak interiors

MotherHome Guesthouse is a simple budget guesthouse that doesn't stand out from much of the competition in town when it comes to style. Elephant statues guard the entrance, where guests pass the open-air restaurant to reach the lobby inside. The look is classic and includes some nice teak furniture, big wooden chairs, and long carved benches which are a common feature in Siem Reap. A teak staircase wraps upstairs behind the reception desk and looks particularly handsome. There's a simple massage room to the side has some bas-relief Angkor carvings, and upstairs at the end of the hallway is a balcony with chairs and a table for anyone wanting to relax and watch the street below. It's a quiet hotel, and with few facilities, so traveler's mainly use it as a place to sleep between touring the temples. Staff greets guests with cold towels and chilled drinks, and couples and groups of friends making up the majority of those staying here.

Location

A quiet neighborhood with restaurants and shops nearby

MotherHome Guesthouse is located near Wat Bo, the town's oldest temple (though not one of the ancient Angkor temples). The hotel sits on a small dirt road that is rutted, and can get rather muddy in the rainy season, but it's a quiet location, especially when compared to the rowdier areas right in the center of town. Pub Street and the main Old Market area are a good 15-minute walk from here, although it's easy to find tuk-tuks out on Wat Bo Road. Angkor Wat is a 15-minute drive from the guesthouse, and the other temples are a bit farther. Despite being located in a rather dark and quiet area at night, there are a good number of restaurants and shops out on Wat Bo Road, making it convenient to stay here for those who don't want to be around the loud entertainment of Pub Street in the evening. The streets that run east from this side of the Siem Reap River are also packed with some of the trendiest dining in town, all within a five to 10-minute walk. Expect a 15-minute drive to the airport.

Rooms

Simple and clean rooms with a few nice extras

There are only Standard Rooms available at MotherHome Guesthouse -- 26 of them to be precise -- and they come with double, twin, and triple bed configurations. Rooms are quite simple, but they do have wood desks, cabinets, and framed mirrors, as well as Khmer-pattern bed runners laid across the white comforters. There are small framed paintings of local sights on the white walls, while shimmery purple curtains and wooden half-panels give the rooms a bit of polish. Standard features include flat-screen TVs, safes, mini-fridges, electric kettles, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Bathrooms are small, though they have a decent amount of counter space and include shower/tub combos. Soap and shampoo dispensers along with a toothbrush and comb are provided. None of the rooms have balconies, nor do they have views of anything memorable -- there are decorative bars over all of the windows.

Features

Small open-air restaurant, massage room, and free breakfast buffet

As MotherHome Guesthouse is small, it has almost no facilities. There is no swimming pool, though guests can use the pool at its sister property, MotherHome Inn, which is a 15-minute walk from the guesthouse. Mother Cafe, which is open-air, serves a free breakfast buffet that guests love and included Thai and Western options, along with lunch and dinner items at reasonable rates. There are some Apsara carvings and paintings to make the restaurant cheerful, and the ceiling fans provide relief from the outside heat. The guesthouse also has a small massage area, with four cubicles for treatments. In the lobby, one can find five computers which are free for guests to use; Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Staff can assist with setting up travel and tour programs, which are organized by the nearby MotherHome Inn.
