The Daulat Hotel is a small upper-middle-range boutique in the vibrant Little India neighborhood, near dining and nightlife. Its 16 rooms are packed with amenities, from Nespresso machines to 42-inch flat-screen TVs; mosaic tiled bathrooms have rainfall showers. The standard rooms are cramped and noise from neighboring bars can rage late into the night, but by day, the little rooftop pool and garden terrace are the picture of urban tranquility. The lobby cafe isn't quite a full restaurant, but it serves Western cuisine and exotic Kopi Luwak coffee, along with free breakfast. It's worth comparing rates at the nearby design-heavy Wanderlust, which has similar amenities.
Scene
Restored traditional shophouse with modern decor
Housed in a three-story building that was once a traditional shophouse, The Daulat Hotel blends its British Colonial history and architecture with colorful modern style. Beneath the smart looking white exterior, there's a cozy sidewalk patio sheltered from the street by a low wall of potted plants. The modestly sized lobby places an emphasis on rich natural wood, and incorporates Middle-Eastern decorative flair (the name of the hotel is Persian) in the rugs and ornate hanging lamps.
Location
In Little India surrounded by nightlife and dining
The hotel is located on a short street in Little India, surrounded by the neighborhood's colorful shops, bars, and eateries. The hip boutiques on Haji Lane are a 13-minute walk away, while the bustling Orchard Road shopping area is about 20 minutes away on foot. To the south, Marina Bay, Suntec City, and the Millenia Walk shopping development are also about a 20-minute walk away. Changi International Airport is an 18-minute drive or a minimum of 45 minutes on the East West MRT Line.
Rooms
Stylish rooms with Nespresso machines and 42-inch flat-screen TVs
The 16 rooms and suites come in five styles, ranging from small standard Superior Rooms to airy bi-level lofts with open wooden staircases. The decor is modern and minimalist with wood floors and plain white walls, leaving the decorative focus on lighting and floral and patchwork fabric accents. Shelf-style desks have accompanying colorful chairs with cute quilt-style coverings. A few of the rooms and suites are larger loft-style abodes with airy bedrooms atop open wooden staircases. All rooms have big 42-inch flat-screen TVs, Nespresso machines, iPod docks, and mini-fridges. The bathrooms have mosaic tiled walls with frosted glass rainfall showers.
Features
Rooftop pool and terrace, cafe with sidewalk seating, and free breakfast
The top of The Daulat Hotel hides a long narrow swimming pool -- a first among the former shophouses of Singapore. It's about the width of a hallway, but a nice length for laps. The adjacent garden terrace has loungers and an open rainfall shower on a wooden deck. Downstairs in the lobby, the Wall Street Deli Café serves Western cuisine along with a free breakfast buffet of various pastries and eggs. Guests can take free sodas from a cooler, or sit outside with a pricey cup of Kopi Luwak -- the exotic coffee made from beans that have been first digested (and excreted) by Civet cats.
