The 83-room boutique Story Hotel is a trendy hipster hangout in a central Stockholm neighborhood saturated with designer shops and boutiques. The industrial-chic interiors and artsy vibes attract a cool clientele with an eye for design. Rooms come in varied sizes, but all have ultra comfortable beds, mini-fridges stocked with free refreshments, rainfall showers, and FACE Stockholm toiletries, though some lack storage space. The Story Bar & Lounge is a hip space popular with local residents as well as hotel guests, serving a small selection of snacks and a wide menu of cocktails, and offering DJ sets several evenings a week.

This 65-room contemporary boutique is part of the historic Berns Salonger complex, which includes a bistro, a top-notch Asian restaurant, a ballroom, and a nightclub. The club makes for some loud nights over the weekends, but it often hosts well-known performers, and the hotel's location is superb -- right on a park, just blocks from great shopping and many tourist attractions. Stylish rooms have hardwood floors and bold, quirky wall art, but be prepared to take the room names literally -- the Extra Small Room is, truly, extra small, at just 107 square feet.

Owned by former ABBA member Benny Andersson, the boutique Hotel Rival is located in a residential neighborhood, overlooking a small park. Though popular sites and museums are a 15-minute ride away, the hotel is a destination unto itself, with a large auditorium theater and a popular restaurant and cafe frequented by locals as well as guests. The funky, modern design of the upscale rooms only adds to the hip vibe.

A stylish hotel in a 19th-century schoolhouse and former theater, the 391-room Scandic Grand Central is located in Stockholm's central Norrmalm neighborhood, putting design-conscious guests in the heart of the action. The upscale hotel offers an extensive, free daily breakfast, with organic and gluten-free options, and hosts live music events in the lobby on certain nights. It's also home to several popular bars and restaurants, and has a well-equipped gym with a sauna. Note that some of the rooms in the basement do not have windows, but this is reflected in the lower rates.

The Sheraton Stockholm may be an upscale business hotel, but it's a trendy one, with a hip, colorful bar and a DJ playing in the lobby most nights. Located on the edge of Stockholm's historic Gamla Stan neighborhood, the hotel has 465 large, modern rooms, many of which have water views. Its gym, happy hour offers, and upscale bistro make it a good choice for travelers who like a lot of amenities, and the Sheraton chain is also known for its comfortable beds and top-tier service. 

The Clarion Hotel Sign is a large, upscale chain hotel characterized by sleek contemporary architecture and a young, playful vibe. The location is excellent, opposite an attractive park and with most of the city center easily accessible on foot. Rooms are clean and well-maintained with plenty of space -- apart from the budget-level category -- while some feature great city views. Although breakfast can get busy, the food is generally very good (and is included in room rates). The eighth-floor Selma CitySpa has a rooftop pool that's heated all year, with a poolside bar and DJs in the summer. 

This upscale chain hotel is predictable in terms of its generic decor and the features it offers, but you can't beat its central location (right by the main train station) and the city skyline views on offer at its trendy SkyBar. The 459 modern rooms are equipped with minibars, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, though some are small and due for an update. Despite the extra fee, the breakfast buffet is popular with guests, but the dining room gets easily crowded. There's also an on-site restaurant, well-equipped fitness room, swimming pool, hot tub, and sauna.
