Bottom Line

The 48-room Sunda Resort offers peace and quiet in a tropical setting about a 10-minute drive away from the crowds of Ao Nang. Not a place for partygoers, this three-pearl property is for those looking for a low-key hideaway. The bungalow-style rooms come with cable (tube-style TVs, no flat-screens), mini-fridges, air-conditioning, coffeemakers, and terraces or balconies. The resort has two swimming pools, including a section for kids, and free Wi-Fi, along with motor bike rental and plenty of planked walkways that cut through the property. Rooms are small and basic; lime-green, hot-pink, and orange accent walls break up the monotony and add cheer. More boutique-style lodgings with more amenities are available right in town, though, for about the same price. Since the Sunda Resort serves a large number of Malaysian travelers, its small, covered outdoor restaurant is strictly halal, and does not serve alcohol or pork. The hotel runs a free shuttle service to the beach at scheduled times throughout the day.

Scene

Serene forested hideaway -- not a party place

The Sunda Resort is pretty low-voltage with a low-key vibe. The small resort is nestled into a shaded, forested area, and about the only spot where guests gather is at the two small swimming pools. The restaurant is halal, and does not serve alcohol -- the Sunda is not the place to party, but it offers a quiet retreat. Seekers of solitude will like wandering around the shaded property and green environment.

Location

Far from the  center of town in a forested and green spot

The resort is located well away from the beach and downtown Ao Nang -- it's four to five miles from the center of things. It's located up a quiet side road and feels more like being in the rural countryside than just a 10-minute drive outside Ao Nang. The property is surrounded by tropical jungle, and the road outside is pretty quiet with not too much development nearby. There are few places to eat and drink out here, but the resort runs a shuttle to  the main beach and nightlife area. Most taxis know the resort, though, and are happy to pick up guests. Via a few shortcuts, the Sunda is about the same distance to the airport in Krabi as from the central hotels in Ao Nang -- about a 30-minute drive. The hotel can arrange airport pickups and drop-offs, call taxis and tuk-tuks for guests as needed, and offer tour assistance.

Rooms

Small and few amenities aside from the two swimming pools, yet quiet and peaceful

The bungalow-style rooms are small and come with mini-fridges, air conditioning, tube-style TVs (no flat-screens) with satellite channels, and free Wi-Fi. Guests can choose either the Pool Side Rooms, Canal Side Rooms, or Garden View Rooms; the first two categories have double or twin beds, while Garden View Rooms have twin beds only. Bathrooms are small and have concrete block showers, and toiletries are limited to a small bar of soap and basic shampoo. All rooms have balconies or terraces. The look is pleasing enough if no-frills: Expect tile floors, wood furniture, and in some, bright accent walls.

Features

Two small swimming pools and halal restaurant overlooking the canal

The main features here are the two small swimming pools, one on the pool side of the property, and the other on the canal side. The canal side pool is small, round, and has only a few sun loungers, while the other pool is a bit more happening, with more sunbeds and a few umbrellas. Neither pool has a bar (again, no alcohol is served here). The canal side has more sunshine and space. The resort's halal restaurant is set on a wooden deck over the canal, which meanders through the resort and is a quiet place to relax. The menu consists of Thai dishes, including such clasics as pad thai or green curry.
