Bottom Line

The Comfort Inn East is a budget hotel set in a relatively desolate suburban area of Toronto. The 76 guest rooms are generic but large and well-maintained. The hotel is functional rather than flashy, but includes a few considerate extras like a free hot breakfast buffet and small fitness center. With free on-site parking and a location 30 minutes away from downtown Toronto, the hotel is an affordable base for travelers on business in the area or those who don’t mind driving to reach the city’s main attractions. GO trains to the city center are found within reasonable walking distance, but the walk, plus the 25-minute train ride is a long trek for downtown sightseeing.

Comfort Inn East

Scene

Pleasant, no-frills chain hotel

With its grassy lawn and stone gardens, the entrance of the Comfort Inn East appears modest but also welcoming -- particularly in comparison to the bland buildings that surround it. This sets the scene for the hotel’s interior which, although far from inspiring, feels more cheerful and inviting than the room prices might suggest.

The dark carpet patterns in the hallways look straight out of the ‘80s, but the lobby is bright and there’s a comfortable sitting area by the fireplace. With pastel tones, colorful artwork, and flowers, the lobby and breakfast areas display a touch more creative flair than the virtually-identical guest rooms. The fitness center was empty during our visit so, despite its small size, getting a turn on the equipment doesn’t appear to be an issue. The other common areas were similarly deserted, suggesting that the Comfort Inn East is a quick in-and-out hotel for most guests.

Location

Unattractive suburban location with easy access to the 401 Highway

The Comfort Inn East is located on one of the main roads in Toronto’s Scarborough district. With other hotels, residences, and a few mechanic shops as neighbors, the hotel feels worlds away from the bustling atmosphere of downtown Toronto; however, a 20-minute walk will get you to the Eglinton GO Station from where passengers can reach central Toronto in about 25 minutes by commuter train.

The hotel is a 10- to 15-minute drive away from Scarborough landmarks like Bluffer’s Park Marina, Scarborough Town Centre, and University of Toronto at Scarborough. It’s a suitable base for guests traveling by car, but perhaps somewhat isolated for those relying on walking and public transportation.

Features

A small fitness room, free Wi-Fi, and a free breakfast buffet

Room rates include a free breakfast buffet, which takes place in a compact dining area set within the lobby. The buffet features a selection of fruit, cereal, and yogurt, as well as hot items like eggs and waffles.

The fitness room is tiny, offering only a few pieces of equipment; but for a budget hotel, any fitness facilities at all could be considered a plus. Other amenities include a large private meeting room, daily newspapers, free on-site parking, and a 24-hour business center cubicle with a public computer station. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
