Full of antiques and lavish decor, the Somerville is an upscale boutique bed-and-breakfast with opulent interiors and pleasant gardens. Its lounge is reminiscent of a Louis XIV 17th-century salon, with a collection of curios and tasseled finery (and a complete set of Agatha Christie's books). The hotel's classical look is a bit more subdued in its nine rooms, though gilded headboards, floral pattern fabrics, and cut-glass chandeliers are in the same stylistic vein. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, iPod docks, mini-fridges, and good quality tea/coffee facilities, while rooms also benefit from free Wi-Fi, bottled mineral water, and bedside candy. Beds are comfortable with goose-down toppers, and modern bathrooms come with bathrobes and luxury (albeit wall-mounted) toiletries. Each unit offers gorgeous sea views (most rooms have a balcony or terrace), as well as a flat-screen TV, Nespresso machine, Sonos music system, and White Company toiletries. Thoughtful in-room extras include decanters of free sloe gin and hot water bottles with turndown service. For something closer to Torquay's center, travelers should check out The Somerville -- though some may find its opulent decor a bit fussy.

The Orestone Manor is a lovely Georgian property set on beautiful grounds with views of the South Devon coast. The 14 guest rooms are stylish, spacious, and immaculately clean, and most look over the gardens and sea. Some have outdoor hot tubs and other extras like separate living rooms, and all have attractive modern bathrooms. There's not much in terms of on-site features (no spa here, like at Cary Arms), other than an inviting lounge with a fireplace and a popular restaurant emphasizing local ingredients -- some of which are culled from Orestone's on-site garden.
