Bottom Line

Waterfront settings are commanding at the three-pearl OldWell Hotel, where Italian and international leisure travelers come for the scenic coastal location, solid dining, and attractive rates. The private beach is a bonus for the price, though don't expect much from the 12 rooms, which are small and mostly spartan, though some have funky, colorful accents. Expansive restaurant and bar terraces take in magnificent sea views amid dramatic cliff backdrops, but there are no pool, fitness center, or wellness amenities. The property is isolated, at a 10-minute drive from Tropea. Losing the beach (but not the view), Hotel Valemare is a good downtown alternative.

OldWell Hotel

Scene

Seafront hotel with a private beach but underwhelming features

Named after the "Old Well" around which it was built, this family-run establishment makes the most of its sensational beach setting (where sunsets are gorgeous), but expect more from the view than the average-looking interiors and limited list of amenities. Like many of the rooms, the front desk is small, dark, and spartan. The restaurant's aquas and exposed stone are likewise lackluster, but they quickly give way to gorgeous Biaci Bay views. Dining terraces right above crashing waves are scenic, and they make for atmospheric meals, but the restaurant is only open in high season. The property sits amid manicured gardens with exotic plants, but it's the private beach and clear waters that give this hotel an edge. Snorkel-friendly shores and a small outdoor playground make it popular with families and couples alike, but bear in mind you're isolated here, and vehicles are needed for the 10-minute drive to Tropea. The hotel is only open April though mid-October.

Location

Spectacular beach setting, a short drive from Tropea

This property is set along the beach, in an isolated spot with only a beach store and a few hotels in walking distance. It's also not served by any public transportation, so a vehicle is recommended here, although taxis for the 10-minute drive to Tropea aren't expensive. Tropea's medieval streets are great to wander, and historic sights include a monastic church and Norman cathedral, plus shopping, dining, a marina, and train station. Other towns and villages are a short drive. Lamezia Terme International Airport is about an hour away by car.

Rooms

Small rooms with dated or funky decor; worth upgrading to a sea view

Rooms here aren't the largest or the brightest, but they're clean, air-conditioned, and outfitted in dated or contemporary styles. Wood-framed beds with patterned or striped covers in older rooms have fresher counterparts in the 2014-renovated units, where pastel or purple walls have Audrey Hepburn or marine-themed artwork. Studded headboards in black, white, or pinks offset cuboid or blond-wood furniture and light tiled floors. Tiny windows and dingy drapes are spartan, and rooms lack kettles, unfortunately. Phones, desks, satellite flat-screen TVs, and mini-fridges or kitchenettes come standard, as do hairdryers, AC, and free (but spotty) Wi-Fi.

Most units offer furnished outdoor spaces, but only upgraded categories provide sea views. These are lateral in most, or full in monochrome Suites, where terraces are right above the water, and Marilyn Monroe graces interiors with retro chandeliers. Tiled bathrooms have cubicle showers that are modern or worn, plus bidets, toiletries, and towels. Safes are free, but crib fittings incur charges. Room maintenance issues have been problematic for past guests, but they're largely minor.

Features

Private beach and free breakfast, but no pool

Amenities aren't extensive here, and some travelers may be disappointed by the lack of a pool, gym, and spa. However, the private beach is the hotel's focal point, and summers see it come alive, when the free-to-use loungers and umbrellas are most popular. Natural rock formations here are great for diving, and though beachfront dining isn't offered, large bar and restaurant terraces high above the sand provide great views.

Served buffet-style, free breakfasts offer homemade cakes, continental spreads, tea, coffee, and juice. The OldWell Restaurant only operates June through September, but its Italian and seafood specialities are well-received. Bar and restaurant interiors have a shabby-chic look from exposed stone and curved counters in turquoise, and charm thanks to wood-beamed ceilings. The bar serves drinks, snacks, and ice cream. A small outdoor playground is near dining terraces. Free parking, pet stays, and property-wide Wi-Fi round out features.
