Bottom Line

The 10-room Albergo San Samuele is a no-frills hotel that offers affordable rooms near the Grand Canal. The small hotel features a comfy lounge with a shared kitchenette and an Internet corner. Rooms are basic and have traditional decor, but lack TVs and air-conditioning. Some offer exposed wood beam ceilings, Murano glass fixtures, and balconies. If the lack of in-room TV is a deal-breaker, try the Hotel Hesperia, which also has some budget-friendly rooms and is near the railway station.

Scene

A standard, no-frills Venetian hotel featuring a homey lounge

The Albergo San Samuele provides travelers with a competitively priced Venice getaway in a traditional and cozy setting, minus any luxuries. The historic four-story hotel, once a Venetian residence, is geared toward budget-minded solo travelers and couples who plan on spending the majority of their vacation outside of the hotel, exploring the narrow city streets and historic sites. The exterior of the building is unassuming and blends into the romantic city, with an exposed stone floor and wooden shutters on the windows. The entryway is rustic, with stone flooring, exposed wooden beams, brick walls, and paintings. There’s no on-site elevator. A staircase leads up to a homey lounge featuring casual black chairs and end tables.

Location

Nestled in the Castello district near the Grand Canal

The Albergo San Samuele is conveniently located in the Castello district, in an area surrounded by shops, restaurants, and art galleries. It's a three-minute walk from the Sant' Angelo vaporetto (water bus) stop and a two-minute walk to the Grassi Palace. Saint Mark's Square and Bassillica are five minutes away on foot and the Bridge of Sighs and the Rialto Bridge take 10 minutes or so to reach. The Santa Lucia railway station is 25 minutes on foot and the airport takes just over an hour by vaporetto.

Rooms

Standard rooms feature traditional Venetian decor and Murano glass lamps; some have balconies

The Albergo San Samuele offers Single, Double, and Triple Rooms with en-suite or shared bathrooms. Rooms are basic, with simple but colorful decor and some have balconies. Exposed wood ceiling beams, Murano light fixtures, classic wooden furniture, and antique-inspired decorative pieces add a homey touch to otherwise basic rooms. Views overlook a narrow Venice street or the courtyard. All rooms feature writing desks, free Wi-Fi, and fans, but lack air-conditioning and TVs. Private bathrooms have modern fixtures, heated towel racks and bidets. Rooms without private bathrooms have in-room sinks and share a white-tile bathroom in the hall with a shower and a bidet. The decor in these rooms is even simpler.

Features

Kitchenette for guest use, plus a cozy business room with a computer, and basic concierge services -- but nothing else

A small kitchenette offers a shared refrigerator and microwave as well as a coffeemaker and a kettle for guest use.  There's also a computer for guest use located in a small business room with damask wallpaper, a Murano chandelier, and antique furniture. There are also books and umbrellas available for guests to borrow and the front desk can provide basic concierge services, such as making restaurant reservations.
