Bottom Line

The 18-room Alloggi Agli Artisti is a small, no-frills hotel centrally located near the Grand Canal and the Santa Lucia train station. Rooms are basic and have classic but dated decor, flat-screen TVs, and air-conditioning; some also have balconies. Some rooms share bathrooms and there's no elevator. Scene

Value hotel with a prime Venice location popular with couples on a budget

The Alloggi Agli Artisti is geared toward budget-minded couples seeking a hotel near the train station. The small hotel has an arched entrance with stained-glass accents and a few stairs that lead through wooden glass doors. There's also a wheelchair lift that runs parallel to the steps. Inside, there’s a small reception area with a modern black-and-white front desk and a sitting area with a mini-fridge. Until the 1960s, the building that now houses the hotel was used as a factory for Brillantina Linetti, a hair pomade. It was converted into a residence before finally becoming a guest house in 2004.

Location

Tucked between the Grand Canal and the train station

Alloggi Agli Artisti is a two-minute walk from the Grand Canal, while the Santa Lucia train station and its adjacent Ferrovia vaparetto (water bus) stop take four minutes to reach on foot. The Casino di Venezia is 10 minutes away on foot and the Rialto Bridge takes 20 minutes. San Marco Square and its Basillica take about 25 minutes to reach and the Bridge of Sighs takes closer to half an hour on foot. The Marco Polo Airport is a 20-minute bus ride or one-hour vaporetto ride from the hotel.

Rooms

Traditional, basic rooms with flat-screen TVs; some have balconies

The Alloggi Agli Artisti offers Single and Double Rooms with very simple, but quintessentially Venetian, decor including damask details and light-wood touches. Rooms feature flat-screen TVs and air-conditioning and some have safes and/or charming balconies with street views. Small bathrooms have walk-in showers, bidets, and heated towel racks. Wheelchair accessible rooms have bathrooms with handrails and foldout shower seats. The least expensive rooms have shared bathrooms and worn, outdated decor.

Features

An Internet corner, free Wi-Fi, and free continental buffet breakfast -- but nothing else

In the bright hotel lobby is a small sitting area with contemporary -- albeit slightly worn -- black cushioned chairs. An Internet corner -- with a modern desk and chair -- offers a computer for guests and Wi-Fi is free throughout. A bright breakfast room offers red contemporary seating, a flat-screen TV, three large windows, and a free continental buffet with a coffee station. The room can fit up to 30 people and is also available to be reserved for meetings or study groups.
