Bottom Line

The 33-room Hotel Scandinavia is a historic Venice property that appeals to budget-minded travelers who want an affordable, centrally located hotel. The no-frills property serves a free breakfast in an elegant wood-paneled salon and offers 24-hour front desk service and a small upstairs lounge area. Traditional rooms have flat-screen TVs, classic decor, mini-fridges, and safes, but some furnishings feel dated. Some rooms have balconies with views of the Santa Maria Formosa church. Guests seeking modern interior furnishings can try the similarly priced Hotel Palazzo Vitturi.

Hotel Scandinavia – Relais

Scene

Historic hotel features antique decor and a classic breakfast room that overlooks Venice

The Hotel Scandinavia dates back hundreds of years and is purported to be the location where Shakespeare's Desdemona and Othello met. The traditional, antique furnishings, intimate atmosphere, and close location to the Piazza San Marco appeals mainly to couples on vacation, but its larger rooms may be a good choice for families wanting something low-key and relatively affordable.

The six-story historic hotel, featuring green shutters and arched windows, blends in with its historic surroundings. Outside the entrance are street vendors and the beautiful Campo di Santa Maria Formosa, a church from 1492 with a bell tower from 1688. Inside the hotel, guests are greeted in a narrow lobby that is decorated in lacquered wood and tufted red chairs.

The breakfast room -- which serves a free continental breakfast -- is furnished with wood paneled walls, checkered floors, wood ceilings, classic furniture, and a small flat-screen TV. Large windows with white curtains offer views of the Venice streets.

Location

Located close to Campo di Santa Maria Formosa in Venice

The Hotel Scandinavia is on the border of the Castello and San Marco neighborhoods on the island of Venice, in an area full of boutiques and restaurants. The Campo di Santa Maria Formosa church, which is in view from some rooms, is a minute away on foot. The Piazza San Marco, or St. Mark’s Square, is a five-minute walk. The Grand Canal takes 10 minutes to reach on foot, while getting to the Rialto Bridge requires a seven-minute walk. The Saint Lucia Railway Station takes 25 minutes, whether on foot or via the Arancio (Orange) vaporetto line (public transport boat).

Rooms

Classically decorated rooms feel dated but come with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges; some have balconies

The Hotel Scandinavia offers Single Rooms all the way up to Quadruples. All rooms feature flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and air-conditioning, but lack facilities for making tea and coffee. Traditional Venetian furnishings, tile floors, Murano glass light fixtures, and heavy classic draperies can be found in all, and while the beige color scheme makes rooms look neutral and peaceful, some decor feels dated. Wood-beamed ceilings are a lovely touch in Superior Rooms. Windows or narrow balconies in select rooms have Campo di Santa Maria Formosa or Venice city views. Bathrooms are small, with bidets, showers, and heated towel racks.

Tourist information and a small book library are offered at the front desk.
