First opened in 1925, the four-pearl Hotel Majestic Saigon is one of Ho Chi Minh City's grande dames. Chandeliers, wood, marble, and arched windows with stained glass make for a stately feel in the lobby, evoking the bygone colonial era. Rooms are classic and elegant, with polished hardwood floors, period furniture, rotary phones, and impressive marble bathrooms -- but guests have complained that many units are past their prime, and some may find the style a little stodgy. There is a small outdoor pool and bright fitness center on-site. The location within walking distance of many major attractions is a big plus, and the views of Saigon River from the rooftop bar are hard to beat. Wi-Fi is free throughout. It’s worth comparing prices at Grand Hotel Saigon (which features a similar style and better rates) and the luxurious Caravelle Hotel that is also steeped in history, but has a more modern feel and decor.
Scene
An upscale hotel housed in a beautiful colonial building -- but showing some age
Housed in a beautiful cream-colored building dating back to 1925, the Hotel Majestic Saigon offers a glimpse of Ho Chi Minh’s colonial past. The lobby, while starting to show its age, is still grand and luxurious, with stained glass panels above the front desk, striking ceiling moldings, chandeliers, gleaming floors, big flower arrangements, and arched windows overlooking busy Ton Duc Thang Street. From the restaurants to the central courtyard and the lobby bar, the property oozes Old World charm. However, it is in need of some updates, and past guests have complained of tired rooms. Its golden days, when heads of state and other celebrities were among its guests, are in the past -- but for a taste of old Saigon, the Majestic is a lovely choice. Expect a grand and elegant atmosphere, but not the modern updates that other hotels in town are offering.
Location
Overlooking the river, within walking distance of major attractions
The Hotel Majestic Saigon is located on a busy intersection in District 1, right by the Saigon River. There are dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops nearby, and most major attractions are within walking distance of the property. The Opera House is less than a five-minute walk away, and Ben Thanh markets, the Fine Arts Museum, the Opera House, Huynh Thuc Khang street market, Notre Dame Basilica, the War Remnants Museum, and the Independence Palace are all within a 15-minute walk. Xa Loi, the largest pagoda in HCM, is a 15-minute drive away, and the airport can be reached by car in about 25 minutes.
Rooms
Classic, elegant, and bright rooms, with modern amenities and marble bathrooms
The hotel offers several room types, ranging from Colonial Deluxe Rooms to the Colonial Presidential Suite, with a choice of views of the river, city, or pool. All units have similar classic European decor, with period furniture, lovely wall and ceiling moldings, and hardwood floors. Details such as stained glass panels, chandeliers, arched entryways, and rotary phones add Old World charm -- but it may not be everyone’s cup of tea. Furthermore, some rooms are showing some wear and tear, and many guests have complained that the property is overall past its prime. Marble bathrooms are luxurious but also a little dated, with plastic curtains instead of glass screens and older-looking sinks. Room amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, electric kettles (coffeemakers in suites), and air-conditioning. River-facing rooms can get traffic noise, so light sleepers may want to request a room overlooking the pool. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
Features
A small pool, two restaurants, three bars, a casino, and a (basic) gym
The hotel features three bars, of which the rooftop one is the most popular. An average breakfast is served here every morning, but the best things about the rooftop are the expansive river views and the barbecue nights. Another popular bar is the M, with live music at night and a wine menu. Cyclo Restaurant serves Vietnamese cuisine on the ground floor, and Serenade offers a European menu on the seventh level. The pool is small and doesn’t get much sun, but is a nice spot for a quiet afternoon after a day of sightseeing. Those looking to get pampered can book a massage, a body wrap, or a facial at the spa, or head to the barbershop for a haircut. The hotel also offers 10 elegant, fully equipped meeting rooms, on-site parking (for a fee), hands-on cooking classes, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
