Bottom Line

The 154-room Saint George Lycabettus Hotel sits on a winding uphill road that leads to Lycabettus Hill. Family-run since 1973, this understated upscale property, which is a two-minute walk from Kolonaki's shops, galleries, and restaurants, stands out for its panoramic views that extend beyond the Acropolis. It has several restaurants and bars on-site, a summer rooftop pool and bar, a full-service spa and fitness center, and an in-house art gallery. Most rooms have balconies, and come with Coco-Mat bed linens, minibars, satellite TV, free Wi-Fi, and coffeemakers; some premium suites have fireplaces. While the hotel might be more subdued than its luxury competitors (some might call it dowdy), it has a traditional elegance. Free
Wi-Fi is available throughout, but on-site parking comes with a fee.

Scene

Understated traditional luxury

Compared with other luxury hotels
in the area, the family-run Saint George Lycabettus is at the less-grand end of the spectrum.
Modern lighting above the crown molding, antique artwork in the hallways, and
the mixture of different prints, flooring, and fabrics give the hotel an understated ambience. All its restaurants have beautiful views
of Athens and the Acropolis, especially the Grand Balcon, which has floor-to-ceiling windows. Sweeping curtains and silver chairs add
simple elegance to the La Suite Restaurant, while wood flooring and colorful
lights create a modern effect in the spa. The seasonal outdoor pool has
flowing curtains along with a beautiful deck and light-wood outdoor furniture. Coffee
and tea are served in the lobby, and there are many sitting areas around the
hotel composed of clusters of vintage armchairs and contemporary lucite chairs. Between the
decor and design, the Saint George Lycabettus is not as grand as other hotels in its category, but is still lovely.

Location

In affluent Kolonaki

The St. George Lycabettus Boutique Hotel is in the
upscale Kolonaki area, across the street from Dexameni Outdoor Cinema and
Lycabettus Hill. The Byzantine Museum, Benaki Museum, public transportation,
and Syntagma Square are within walking distance, and the Acropolis is a
20-minute metro ride away. Chic shops and restaurants are less than a
15-minute walk from the hotel.

Rooms

Stylish with large windows, but not exactly grand

Missoni fabrics, large windows, and neutral tones define the rooms at the Saint George Lycabettus Hotel, but like the common areas, they
are understated and not knock-out grand. Some of the larger rooms, which include suites, have seating areas, and include double balconies and fireplaces. The Acropolis, Lycabettus Hill, and Saronic Gulf can
be seen through some windows or from balconies. All rooms come with fully
stocked minibars, coffeemakers, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, individual climate control, coffeemakers, fluffy down
comforters, bathrobes, and Coco-Mat bed linens and towels. Pretty bathrooms are decorated
in marble or mosaic tile, and have shower/tub combos, bidets, nice lighting, and toiletries. Rooms are soundproofed, but guests complain about exterior noise from the hallways and sometimes the street. The rooms are undoubtedly comfortable, but they don't shine quite as brightly as those of their luxury competitors.

Features

Lovely on-site spa, several restaurants, and seasonal outdoor pool with amazing views

The on-site spa, Sensia, showcases a Turkish bath, spa tub,

Mediterranean food; the Grand Balcon focuses on Greek cuisine; and Tony’s bar is for drinks
and snacks. There’s also a seasonal poolside bar and pool with treats -- and panoramic views of the Acropolis and Athens. The in-house SG Art Gallery exhibits Greek and international
contemporary art. Free Wi-Fi, plus 24-hour business and concierge services, are also available, along with limited hours room service.
