Bottom Line

The four-pearl Hotel Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road draws design-savvy travelers looking for high-end amenities in a funky, modern atmosphere. Notable amenities include a rooftop infinity pool with awesome city views, a restaurant with a Thai street food menu, and an excellent top floor fitness center. Like the rest of the hotel, the 192 rooms and suites are spacious and designed with an upscale flair that combines modern and vintage decor. The location just off Ploen Chit Road, means bars, malls, nightlife, and the skytrain are nearby. The lack of a spa keeps this hotel from living up to its luxury claims, and some guests find the motion-activated air-conditioning inconvenient. By contrast, the Sivatel Bangkok is a comparable option with similar location and amenities, plus a top notch spa.

Hotel Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road

Scene

Quirky design details inspired by the history of Thailand’s wireless radio

The Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road opened in 2015, but unlike many newer hotels in the area, it's made a concerted effort to create an atmosphere that mixes old and new. Inspired by its location on Wireless Road, an area famous for being the birthplace of Thailand’s first radio stations, the hotel’s design juxtaposes inspiration from both tradition and technology. In public areas of the hotel, murals that look like street art are a backdrop for sculptures made of old radios and TVs. The lobby has wood floors and beams, and high ceilings, and are decorated with a mix of modern and vintage furniture. Special attention has been paid to combining an eclectic mix of lighting fixtures in both public areas of the hotel and in rooms. The hotel’s bar, 22 Steps, is designed like a speakeasy, and a small hotel shop looks like an old apothecary. The Indigo Bangkok tends to draw all kinds of travelers from families to honeymooners to business travelers, especially those looking to soak in the unusual atmosphere and quirky design details.

Location

Off Ploen Chit Road, near the skytrain, shopping, nightlife, and Lumpini Park

The area immediately surrounding the Hotel Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road is a busy and centrally located business district, with many other high rises that house businesses, shopping malls, residences, hotels, restaurants and bars. It's only a five-minute walk to Ploen Chit Road and the Ploen Chit Skytrain station, and nightlife off of Sukhumvit Road is a 15-minute walk away. Lumpini Park is a 10- to 15-minute walk away and is great for escaping Bangkok's chaos -- some rooms even have views of it. For guests looking to explore Bangkok’s main attractions, it’s a 30 to 40-minute trip by car or public transportation to the historic sites in Rattanakosin, like Wat Pho and the Grand Palace, or the Khaosan Road Nightmarket. Expect a 30-minute trip to the Silom area by skytrain, and 35 minutes by skytrain to Chatuchak Weekend Market. Budget at least an hour to reach either of Bangkok's international airports -- traffic can be a bear (and that's an understatement).

Rooms

Funky decor plus free Wi-Fi and extensive minibars, many with great city views

Like the rest of the hotel, rooms have a quirky, modern-meets-vintage design and the eclectic mix of furnishings plus abundant space creates an upscale atmosphere. Expect to see details like brightly colored dragon motif rugs, framed black-and-white historical photos of Thailand, purple velvet sofas, and metallic chests. Suites have homey living areas and floor-to-ceiling windows with great city views. Ninety percent of all rooms have balconies with a seating area, and although the city views are fantastic, this also means occasionally disruptive street noise seeping into some rooms.

The design sensibility in the rooms can also be found in the mostly marble bathrooms, all of which are relatively spacious and many have tubs as well as showers, and high end toiletries. All rooms are air-conditioned, although the sensors are motion activated. This means that if there's no movement in the room -- including while guests are sleeping -- the air-conditioning will turn off and the room can become quite hot. Standard features include robes and slippers, desks, extensive minibars, irons and ironing boards, and safes. Electric kettles also come standard, though upgraded rooms add high-end coffeemakers. Wi-Fi is free in rooms and throughout the rest of the hotel.

Features

Great amenities including a rooftop infinity pool, restaurant, and top-floor fitness center

Of the many amenities at the Indigo Bangkok Wireless Road, one highlight is the rooftop infinity pool, set at the corner of the building with an incredible vantage point to view the Bangkok skyline. The pool itself is on the small side, but the lounging area is sizable and set with striped lounge chairs and other nautical details. Another notable feature at the hotel is Metro on Wireless, the restaurant that serves a menu featuring authentic, hard-to-find items inspired by Thai street food. A buffet style breakfast is available for an extra fee and includes both buffet and a la carte options. A speakeasy-like bar called 22 Steps and a beautifully high-end business center are also worth noting, and all are in keeping with the hotel’s careful attention to ambience. Guests can work off the gluttony at a fitness center on the 24th floor, which has modern weight and cardio machines in a light-filled room with big windows. There is no spa. Other perks include same-day dry cleaning, cribs for families with small children, free parking, and free newspaper delivery to rooms. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
