Bottom Line

The 92-room HCC Taber is a mid-range hotel near the Passeig de Gracia, one of Barcelona’s premier shopping streets. The location is the hotel's biggest selling point as guest rooms are generic, although some do have balconies. The hotel’s services and amenities include meeting rooms, a bar, and a breakfast buffet (for a fee). Guests looking for a similarly priced hotel with more personality should try Cien Hotel just around the corner, where rooms have a rustic, chic vibe.

Scene

Simple hotel with minimal features for guests who prefer location over style

The HCC Taber's ornate yellow facade -- complete with balconies, French doors, and a grand bay window just over the entryway -- makes a classic first impression. Once inside, however, it’s clear that this is a straightforward, barebones hotel. Light tiles and a few contemporary chairs tucked into nooks along the wall don’t do much to make the anonymous, mostly white space an inviting place to mingle over coffee or drinks. The hotel attracts tourists and business travelers alike.

Location

Quiet Eixample street, just one block off Passeig de Gracia

The Taber is on a quiet street in
Barcelona’s busy Eixample neighborhood, within walking distance of many of the city’s main landmarks. There are plenty of restaurants and bars in the areas,
while Gaudi’s famous Casa Batllo and the Passeig de Gracia -- a major pedestrian
street crammed with high-end shops -- are each just one block away. Plaza
Catalunya is a 10-minute walk from the hotel and the upper part of La Rambla is
just around the corner. The Passeig de Gracia metro station is a
seven-minute walk from the hotel’s front door and trains make trips to Barceloneta
and the beach in about 15 minutes. The Aerobus from Plaza Catalunya can reach El
Prat International Airport in 40 minutes, while a taxi makes the same trip in
about half the time.

Rooms

Basic, modern rooms with neutral decor

Like most properties in the HCC chain, the rooms here are clean and simple, if a bit underwhelming given
the hotel's contrastingly grand exteriors. Guest rooms are dominated by
neutral tones, from the light-wood laminate floors to the bed runners, throw
pillows, and tan-on-tan checkerboard walls. Wall art is limited to single
framed landscape prints in most rooms, and feels like an afterthought rather than part of the design scheme. Single Rooms
are small, while Double and Triple Rooms offer much more space, and several
rooms have small terraces that overlook the street. The furniture is dark and of the mass-produced variety found in offices and hotels around the world, but overall it's in good shape and the beds
are fine, if a bit squeaky. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and safes. Bathrooms are large and clean, but look dated, with
faux-marble tile, tan marble vanities, and hairdryers.
While all rooms have air-conditioning, past guests have complained that it is not always adequate,
and noise from doors along the hallways in the hotel can be disruptive at
night.

Features

Continental breakfast buffet, small bar, free Wi-Fi, meeting rooms, but no on-site restaurant

While there's no restaurant on-site, room service is available during limited hours. The bright breakfast room serves a continental buffet with hot options on request every morning, though it’s not included in most rates and can be expensive otherwise. The on-site bar offers a passable place for those who need a quick drink, but there are far more charming spots for coffee or cocktails in the neighborhood. There are two windowless meeting rooms; catering and audiovisual equipment are available on request.  Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and there's a small business center on site. The hotel also provides laundry and dry cleaning services, though prices can be steep.
