Meson Castilla Atiram

This hotel is housed in an old manor house, and has a lot more classic character than many of its nearby competitors. We were actually surprised at just how different it was from other city-center value hotels when we visited. Once inside, lovely stained glass windows span one wall next to the wooden front desk, and a handsome grandfather clock adds even more character. Wood floors and ceiling create a warm, cozy setting, with ornate gold floor lamps and wall hangings. Vintage armchairs and settees provide seating where guests can hang out, and vending machines dispense drinks and snacks. The hotel overall is a bit quirky, but the atmosphere is friendly and relaxed. With its central location and reasonable rates, it draws all sorts of travelers, including couples, families, groups, individuals, and businesspeople. 

This hotel is centrally located in the just to the southwest of Plaza Catalunya, right in the middle of Barcelona. The plaza and the top of Las Ramblas will take about five minutes to reach on foot. The immediate area buzzes with activity day and night, and the hotel is surrounded by numerous shops, bars, and restaurants. The Museum of Contemporary Art is just four minutes away on foot, and La Boqueria public market is about an eight-minute walk. It's a five-minute walk to metro stations at Universitat and Catalunya. Gaudi's Sagrada Familia is 15 minutes away by car or public transportation, and the Gothic Quarter is just across Las Ramblas -- a five- to 15-minute walk depending on your destination. Barcelona El Prat Airport is 25 minutes away by car or 40 minutes by public transportation. 

Rooms are traditionally styled with ornate painted headboards and wooden furniture. Floors are tile or wood, and some walls are wallpapered. Chandeliers hang from high ceilings, enhancing the already ornate vibe. While the look is convincingly classic and appeals to many guests, some details -- like old bedspreads in blue or gold -- just wind up looking dated. Amenities include small flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and air-conditioning. Safes are available at reception for a fee. Bathrooms are small but come with hairdryers, bidets, and toiletries. Some have showers only and others tub/shower combos. Some rooms have balconies furnished with plastic chairs and a small table. Views are mostly of neighboring buildings or the street. Family rooms have up to four twin-size beds. Previous guests have complained about street noise in some rooms, as this is one of the livelier parts of the city throughout the day and night. 

This simple hotel does not offer much in the way of features. A free continental breakfast is served daily in the cozy breakfast room, which is done with paneled walls and ceiling and a black-and-white tiled floor. In nice weather, guests can dine out on the lovely patio filled with lush green plants. A computer is set up in the lobby for guests to use, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. On-site parking is available for a fee.
