Bottom Line

The Hotel Roger De Lluria Barcelona is a mid-range property in Eixample with a classic vibe and somewhat dated decor. The 48-room hotel is a minute's walk from Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, a major boulevard dotted with beautiful plazas, and a 20-minute walk to Las Ramblas and the old city. Guest rooms and common areas feel a bit tired, with ornate satin couches and traditional wood furniture, although some have impressive Modernist details. The on-site restaurant and bar serve meals, snacks, and cocktails throughout the day. Breakfast is not included in the room rates, and while it's extensiv,e it's quite pricey. For a more modern aesthetic, guests may want to consider the H10 Universitat Hotel in Eixample, which has a rooftop terrace.

Scene

Elegant and traditional with nods to its Ritz past

Built in 1899, the hotel is housed in a Modernist five-floor building with balconies overlooking the street. Guests are mainly couples and families, with some business travelers mixed in. The gray stone paving in front of the hotel makes for a clean entrance way, which is decorated simply with potted trees at either side of sliding glass doors. Inside, the mirrored vestibule emits the essence of old Ritz, a family of hotels to which the Roger De Lluria once belonged. The lobby is traditional but warm, with ornately patterned sofas, Persian rugs, and wood furniture. The Lobby Bar is also classic, with beige armchairs and round wood tables, a molded ceiling, and a warmly lit dark wood bar -- a black and red wall tapestry and tropical plants provide some color. The restaurant feels formal, with its wood floors, big columns, and long white tablecloths.

Location

On a busy street in Eixample, a 10-minute walk to the Plaza de Catalunya and 20 minutes to Las Ramblas

The hotel is set within a minute's walk of Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, one of the city's main boulevards. The immediate area is busy with cafes, bars, and shops, and not far from several Gaudi landmarks, such as Casa Batilo. Guests are within a 10-minute walk of Plaza de Catalunya and the Passeig de Gracia, and about a 20-minute walk to Las Ramblas in the old city. Three different metro lines converge at Passeig de Gracia, putting Barcelona's major sights within convenient reach of the Roger de Lluria, and Passeig de Gracia is also a railway station, with a direct connection to the airport. The hotel can arrange for an airport shuttle -- for a fee. The drive to the airport takes about a half hour.

Rooms

Traditional with some modern touches and impressive architectural details

Guest rooms have an elegant and classic style, with navy-blue carpeting and brocade-patterned wallpaper, along with somewhat dated drapes and bedspreads, and traditional wood furniture. The overall vibe is a bit blah. Rooms have views of either the street or courtyard, and come with flat-screen TVs, coffeemakers, fully stocked minibars, and safes. Suites have separate sitting areas with Modernist ceilings, but similarly traditional decor. Some rooms have terraces, and those in the front of the property are brighter. Bathrooms are clean and modern, with beige tile throughout, and shower/tub combos.

Features

Restaurant and bar, free Wi-Fi, and shuttle service

The El Mirall restaurant serves a buffet breakfast, as well as lunch and dinner. The cocktail bar offers snacks and drinks throughout the day and evening. Breakfast can be taken in the room and includes an array of hot and cold items, but expect to pay a lot. There's a small business area in the lobby with a desktop computer and printer at a handsome wood desk. The hotel can also arrange for a round-trip airport shuttle, for a fee. On-site parking is also available for a fee. In-room massages can be booked, and guests get a discount at the nearby fitness center, as there isn't one on-site. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, though the signal can be a bit spotty in rooms.
