Bottom Line

With quirky art throughout the hotel including huge eyeball pictures in hallways and large hands painted on guest room walls, the Room Mate Pau is a cool pick for tourists visiting Barcelona and wanting to stay somewhere inspiring. The mid-range, chain hotel has 66 funky guest rooms with colorful striped carpets and sleek, white furnishings. The hotel has a breakfast buffet, and a big, outdoor terrace. It's in a convenient location -- 55 yards from Plaza Catalunya and less than a five-minute walk to the shops and restaurants on Las Ramblas. Guests give Room Mate Pau glowing reviews, but for less money, the well-liked Hotel Denit Barcelona is another popular pick in the area.

Scene

Edgy art and creative details throughout hotel

The playfully suggestive slogan “Do you want to sleep with me?” is painted on a frosted glass panel, greeting guests as they enter the hotel. Inside, there’s a lot to look at. Playful, modern art pops up in unexpected places. The elevator bay is camouflaged by a ceiling-high picture of a houndstooth jacket with an orbital design substituting for a head. A black seating area with cube couches features several stories of giant eyeball pairs, and colorful striped carpeting stretches down hallways and up staircases. Outside on the big, wooden terrace black-and-white head statues stand in for stools and planters.

Location

Convenient location near popular pedestrian mall Las Ramblas, and the Plaza Catalunya

Room Mate Pau is in an excellent location for guests wanting to be near the action. It’s within a block of the Plaza Catalunya (a metro station hub where several lines converge) and two blocks from the popular mall Las Ramblas, with plenty of shops (the major department store El Corte Ingles is next door) and restaurants nearby. The hotel is walking distance to the Passieg de Gracia, site of much of the Gaudi architecture, and is less than a 20-minute ride to the Sagrada Familia on public transportation. The airport is less than a 20-minute drive away.

Rooms

Artsy, modern rooms with colorful striped carpeting and wood-paneled bathrooms

White, Swiss cheese-like headboards and huge bold paintings like those of giant hands give guest rooms an artsy vibe. Rooms are modern with colorful striped carpeting and wood-paneled bathrooms. All rooms have consumer magazines, minibars, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. VGA, HDMI, and USB on the desktop allow for a laptop connection to the flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. The nifty packaging for the bath gel and shampoo is much cooler than the basic small bottles at other hotels. While some rooms have balconies, suites have wooden terraces with pod-like chairs, couches and outdoor hot tubs and playful, plentiful amenity kits, including a “Comb for Sexy Hair” and a “Shower Cap for Brilliant Minds.”

Features

Eye-catching artwork and computer available to guests in lobby

The eye-catching interior of Room Mate Pau designed by Teresa Sapey makes the hotel a fun place to explore. The breakfast buffet is served in a room where big and small tables, as well as couches, are available. More seating is located on the big, outdoor terrace with foliage and green-and-yellow striped walls. The lobby has a computer where guests can log on to the Internet, and several refrigerators filled with a large variety of drinks are available for a fee in a common area, but there’s no fitness center, pool or restaurant for lunch and dinner.
