Bottom Line

The mid-range Silken St. Gervasi is a contemporary and intimate property with 63 modern, but basic rooms. All units have flat-screen TVs and minibars. Decor is simple and streamlined, but suites add a bit of extravagance with deep jetted tubs. The property provides a few amenities for its clients like a breakfast buffet, meeting rooms, and parking. All in all, it’s a good hotel with decent features, though it’s far from the action of central Barcelona, off in the Sant Gervasi neighborhood. Opt for Hotel America Barcelona which is closer to the city center and has a pool and a hot tub.

Scene

Simple, mid-range hotel with generic contemporary decor, popular with couples

Silken St. Gervasi is not remarkable in terms of character or decor, but it’s a comfortable mid-range option. Its set in a four-story modern, brick and stone building. Inside, the design is contemporary, even if the large lobby -- with its mix of tiled flooring, wooden front desk, and wooden chairs -- is forgettable. However, floor-to-ceiling windows and displays of newspapers, brochures, and a bowl of apples are nice touches. Things are a little more stylish in the cafe area, with marble tiled floors, maroon columns, and wooden tables with contemporary, stylish gray chairs. The hotel does liven things up with an "experience wall" -- postcards with stories about Barcelona from guests that line the walls of the stairways. Most guests are couples.

Location

Far from the city center and attractions, but near public transportation

True to its moniker, this hotel is located in the Sant Gervasi neighborhood, which has restaurants and some shopping, but not much else. It's located just three minutes from a metro station and four minutes from a bus stop, but it's far from the city center and most major attractions. Park Guell is the closest popular attraction, but getting there still requires a 28-minute walk that’s filled with some hills and stairs. It’s about a 20-minute ride by metro to reach the city center and a 19-minute drive to Barcelona Airport.

Rooms

Basic, modern rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning

Rooms at the Silken have a chain-like vibe that’s less stylish than other mid-range hotels in design-conscious Barcelona. The simple decor consists of blond wooden furniture, white linens, wooden or carpeted floors, and little in the way of decoration beyond a single abstract art piece on the wall. It’s a bland, no-frills design, but its clean and spacious. Amenities include safes, flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. Some rooms also have espresso-makers and couches. The tiled bathrooms are modern with spacious marble sinks with shower/tub combos, bidets, toiletries, and hairdryers. Suites have separate showers and deep tubs with jets.

Features

Breakfast buffet, cafe, bar, meeting rooms, and parking

Silken St. Gervais Hotel lacks a gym, but manages to offer the basic amenities expected of a three-pearl property. A continental buffet breakfast offers a wide variety of items, including cold cuts, cheeses, and pastries, and is included in some rates, but cooked items such as eggs and bacon cost extra. There’s a cafe that serve meals throughout the day and a bar that offers alcohol and coffee. Room service is available, but the hours are limited. There are also two meeting rooms available. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel (but some guests complain that its slow), and guests without laptops can take advantage of a public computer and printer. While there is on-site parking, it costs extra and the spaces are tiny.
