Bottom Line

The Tryp Barcelona Apolo is an upper-middle-range hotel with a somewhat generic look. It offers 265 rooms that offer contemporary, chain-like decor, though some show signs of wear and tear. Located in the Theater District, it’s a 10-minute walk to the busy, tree-lined Las Ramblas. Convenient for business travelers, the hotel has meeting rooms and a tiny business center and is a short drive away from the Fira Barcelona convention center. It offers a breakfast buffet, restaurant, and a bar/cafe, but not much else in the way of features. Also, some guests have complained of smoke odors and noise issues. It may also be worth considering the similarly priced Park Hotel Barcelona, though it lacks an on-site restaurant.

Scene

A few distinctive touches, but a somewhat chain-like feel throughout

The building is older with a fairly plain, generic look. A spacious lobby offers brown leather couches and chairs clustered around plain tables, but minimal decor outside of some potted plants. One unique highlight is a spot where guests can write notes about enjoyable places they visited in Barcelona and stick them to a board to share with other travelers. The chain-like feel carries over to the restaurant, which has a contemporary feel, but not much character (think simple wooden chairs and tables). The Apolo Café has a bit more charm, with an old-timey feel characterized by classic cafe chairs and tables that look to be made of wrought iron and illustrations of performers lining the walls.

Location

On a busy street near Las Ramblas and City Harbor

The Tryp Barcelona is located in the Theater District of Barcelona. It is actually housed in the same building as the famous Apolo Theater. The property is situated on a busy street across from a bus stop. It’s a 10-minute walk to the popular pedestrian mall, Las Ramblas. Also, the hotel is a 13-minute walk from the World Trade Center Barcelona business park and 15- to 20-minute drive away from the Fira Barcelona trade fair institution, depending on traffic.

Rooms

Fitness room category offers exercise equipment and the family room category has bunk beds

Rooms are bright with light wooden furnishings and wall panels, blue accents, large mirrors in lieu of regular headboards, and carpeting in a neutral color scheme. Some guests have complained of signs of wear and tear, however. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, coffee/tea kettles, and phones in the bathrooms. The fitness room category comes equipped with exercise equipment and a fitness kit including a T-shirt, exercise mat, bottled water, and two extra towels. The family room category has bunk beds and features a baby kit, children’s toothbrush, and gifts for the kids. The premium room category has a bathrobe and slippers for guests. Light sleepers, take note -- noise from both inside and outside the hotel is a major issue for some who stay here.

Features

Theater-themed cafe/bar, restaurant, and plentiful breakfast buffet for a fee

The hotel offers free access to a nearby gym, but does not have an on-site fitness center. There is a breakfast buffet for a fee that has a wide variety of hot and cold items, including gluten-free foods. Guests can get an a la carte breakfast in the restaurant, where lunch and dinner are also served. The Apolo Café serves snacks and drinks in the afternoons and evenings. There is an outdoor courtyard with some tables and chairs. A small business center is available for guests to use just outside the bar, and there are 11 meeting rooms.
