The Hotel d'Argouges is a 28-room hotel housed in an attractive 18th-century townhouse in the center of historic Bayeux. Many of its traditionally styled rooms retain period features and somewhat dated floral decor, while bathrooms are more modern. The quiet garden and ornate breakfast room are particularly impressive -- though breakfast costs extra. As it's a historic property, the hotel lacks an elevator and some of the rooms have notably low ceilings. Overall, it's a well-positioned hotel with low rates -- but few amenities.
Scene
Charming 18th-century townhouse with simple room decor, but a pretty garden
Entering from the road through an impressive coach gate, visitors pass along a shrub-lined path into a peaceful courtyard dotted with potted plants and colorful flowers. A sweeping mirrored staircase leads up to the main building, a charming 18th-century townhouse with a brick sandstone facade and gray slate roofing. Behind the small front desk inside is a lounge with high ceilings and wood-paneled walls decorated with antique tapestries; the overall look, however, can feel more dated than charmingly historic to some. A set of French doors open up to the hotel's pretty garden at the back, which blooms with fragrant flowers during spring and summer months.
Location
Set in the center of Bayeux, a 10 minutes' walk from the Bayeux Tapestry
The hotel is situated in a quiet courtyard set back from the main road in the center of the picturesque town of Bayeux. Most of the town's shops and bars are just minutes away, while the museum that houses the world-famous Bayeux Tapestry is just over 10 minutes on foot. As the town was relatively unscathed during the Second World War, its historical attractions are particularly well preserved and all are within walking distance. The main train station is just a five-minute drive from the hotel, and Caen-Carpiquet Airport is half an hour away by car.
Rooms
Traditionally styled rooms with period features feel dated to some, but there's free Wi-Fi
The Hotel d'Argouges has 28 rooms spread over three buildings, but not all of them have interiors that match the elegance of the main property. However, rooms are all traditionally styled with typical Normandy antiques, and many remain original period features such as herringbone parquet flooring and exposed wooden beams. Free Wi-Fi and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels come standard, while more modern bathrooms include wall-mounted hairdryers, heated towel racks, and walk-in showers.
Features
Breakfast (for a fee) in an ornate dining room, plus free Wi-Fi and parking
Facilities are few at the Hotel d'Argouges. A full buffet breakfast is served in the superbly ornate 18th-century-style dining room filled with antiques, or in the pretty garden during warmer months. Note that there's an additional fee for breakfast. Wi-Fi, however, is free throughout, as is private on-site parking at the back of the hotel.
