Bottom Line

The Tamarind Village is a charming boutique hotel located in the middle of Chiang Mai's old city. The small resort, built in a traditional northern Thai Lanna style with whitewashed plaster walls and dark timber beams, is set around lovely courtyards with flower-filled gardens and a 200-year-old giant tamarind tree. The rooms here, although small, are filled with unique touches such as homemade ethnic hill tribe handicrafts and outdoor showers, with cozy balconies overlooking the gardens. While there is no fitness center and the swimming pool is small, there is a pampering spa with beautiful decor, and the cozy poolside restaurant serves up northern Thai cuisine.

Scene

Quiet, relaxed, and elegant, with plenty of gardens and greenery

The Tamarind Village is simultaneously elegant, peaceful, and laid-back. Designed by renowned national Thai architect Ong-Ard Satrabhandhu, this was Chiang Mai's first Lanna-styled hotel, using traditional techniques and materials of the Lanna period. With the hotel's old-style feel and serene gardens set in courtyards, romantics will feel very much at home here, and indeed, the small resort is filled with boutique-loving, culture-appreciating young couples. Those who want a more party atmosphere with the accoutrements of a big hotel probably will want to go elsewhere, as this spot is meant for those seeking greenery, quiet, and cozy spots under the trees to admire the surroundings.

Location

Up a hidden driveway in the heart of Chiang Mai's historic old town

The Tamarind Village is set back from the street in historical old Chiang Mai, hidden up a narrow drive, giving it a feel of secluded peace and quiet. It is right in the center of the old city, so guests can easily walk to all of the famous temples and attractions that the old city is known for. With its garden courtyards and prime location, those looking to experience old Chiang Mai couldn't pick a better spot.

Rooms

Small rooms have unique designs and furnishings, along with quiet balconies and outdoor showers

Although on the small side (the resort describes them as "cozy"), the rooms at the Tamarind Village are comfortable, with large beds and plenty of unique decor, such as homemade crafts and clothing made by northern ethnic Thai hill tribe groups. The bathrooms are nicely designed, with artsy brass sinks, outdoor showers, and other boutique touches. The balconies make up for the lack of space; they are charming spots to sit and admire the gardens and ancient tamarind trees.

Features

Pampering spa with enchanting decor and charming northern Thai restaurant poolside

The pampering Village Spa does herbal facials, body scrubs, and wraps and uses luk pra kob, steamed compresses filled with tamarind, kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, and other local herbs in signature treatments; it's set in a teak filled house. This relaxing retreat makes up for the lack of a fitness center and the fact that the swimming pool is rather small and not very private. It is set next to the hotel's lone restaurant/bar which serves inclusive buffet breakfasts as well as northern Thai specialties for lunch and dinner.
