Bottom Line

The four-pearl Montenotte Hotel sits on a hill in a residential neighborhood, overlooking the city and the Lee River from its impressive restaurant and bar terrace. Renovated in 2016 (our photos will reflect this soon), the hotel has been impeccably designed with a fresh and fashionable look. An indoor pool, gym, sauna, restaurant, and business facilities further boost its appeal. Its 108 stylish rooms have flat-screen TVs and kettles, but be aware that they aren't air-conditioned. Apartments with full kitchens are also available. Travelers could also consider the Clarion Hotel Cork, which has a spa and is closer to the city center.

Scene

Fresh from a 2016 renovation, with stylish interiors and local details

Set on a hill, the Montenotte Hotel is housed in a building that was once home to one of Cork’s Merchant Princes, who helped establish Cork as a trading port. The hotel underwent an extensive renovation in 2016, which transformed the interiors into something stylish and sophisticated (new photos will be posted soon).Public spaces mix parquet floors, crown-molding, turquoise seating, and chic elements such as book shelves, candles, and pendant lights. The Panorama Bistro & Terrace take the design to the next level, with a look that feels lifted from the pages of a glossy magazine. Booths and chairs are an elegant emerald green, hanging lamps have '20s flair, and there’s a charming terrace with spectacular views of Cork, day or night. The hotel draws travelers from across the spectrum, including couples, families, friends traveling together, and those in town for business.

Location

Outside the city center on a lovely hillside in a residential area

The Montenotte's location on a hillside provides lovely views, but it’s a bit removed from the city center in a residential neighborhood. There aren't many restaurants and bars within walking distance, but there's a bus stop within a six-minute walk. It’s only a 16-minute walk to the Cork Kent train station, and a 25-minute walk to the city center -- remember that the return trip will be uphill. Blarney Castle, Blackrock Castle, and Fota Wildlife are all about a 15-minute drive from the hotel. It’s a 13-minute drive to Cork Airport.

Rooms

Stylish rooms and apartments with flat-screen TVs, kettles, and free Wi-Fi but no AC

The Montenotte's 108 rooms, which include apartments, vary in terms of their decor, but all are quite stylish. Some have retro, floral accents in pillows and headboards, gray bed runners, and maroon statement walls. Others have spiffy plaid carpeting, a yellow or orange and blue color scheme, trendy chairs, and tufted headboards. Apartments offer extra space, dining rooms, living rooms, and kitchens. Standard amenities in all units include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and kettles, but they lack air-conditioning, safes, and minibars -- surprising for an upscale property. Another downside: Guests can't adjust the heating, and the temperature is not always ideal. The pristine bathrooms are modern with shower/tub combos, and toiletries and hairdryers are provided. Executive Rooms have either high-power or rainfall showers.

Features

Pool, hot tub, gym, restaurant and bar with terrace, breakfast buffet, afternoon tea, meeting rooms, and free parking

While it does lack a spa offering massages and beauty treatments, the Montenotte Hotel has plenty of perks. The hotel’s Motion Leisure Club features a large indoor pool, sauna, hot tub, and a spacious gym with a range of cardio and weight machines. It’s open to the public and offers aerobics class, swimming lessons, and personal trainers. Another highlight is the Panorama Bistro & Terrace, which has stunning views of Cork and the Lee River (especially at night). It's serves a breakfast buffet (with a la carte options), lunch, and dinner, and afternoon tea (for a fee). There's also a bar. Two fully equipped meeting rooms, one of which is a cinema room, are available for business meetings or events. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and a public desktop computer and printer are available for a fee. On-site parking is free.
