Bottom Line

This 21-room, family-run hotel is located high on a hill with panoramic views over the sandy beaches of Kato Stalos, just a 15-minute drive from Chania’s archaeological sites, cafes, and nightlife. Welcoming staff, a good-size pool, a large lawn, and most importantly, those terrific sea views help make Renieris one of the best budget options in the area. It draws older couples and young families who want a laid-back vibe, as well as families with older children who can cope with that steep climb back from the beach.

Renieris Hotel

Scene

Renieris Hotel draws families and couples looking for a clean, peaceful base with panoramic sea views and a location close to Chania town.

Renieris Hotel overlooks a picturesque stretch of sandy beach, and the guests -- mostly older couples and families -- tend to spend their days either on the sand, around the small pool, or sightseeing nearby. In the evenings, many guests head into Chania to enjoy the restaurants and nightlife.

The small property is perched high on a hill, and the town and beach of Kato Stalos are accessible on foot via a steep, 97-step staircase. The surrounding lawns and gardens help lend a tranquil vibe, though the shaded pool bar does host occasional live entertainment on the weekends in high season.

Location

Along a quiet road overlooking the beaches of Kato Stalos

Renieris Hotel is within a 15-minute drive of shops, bars, restaurants, and archeological sites in laid-back Chania town. Note that finding the hotel with GPS can be difficult, so it's best to get detailed instructions from the hotel before arrival. The hotel is also within reach of spectacular trekking opportunities in The Samaria Gorge, a little over an hour's drive away.

Those willing to explore farther-flung attractions will find the tropical beach of Elafonissi, typical villages of the White Mountains, and the fabled Minoan remains of Knossos within a two-hour drive.

Rooms

Small, clean, no-frills rooms with cramped balconies, many with panoramic sea views

The 21 rooms at Renieris hotel have garden or sea views and are grouped around the large hotel pool. The decor is basic and characterless: tile floors, alternating white and pastel walls (with no artwork), and plain, wood furnishings. But many of the rooms have sea views, thanks to the building's amphitheater style layout, and they're truly jaw-dropping.

There are rooms with two single beds or double beds (the two singles pushed together); cribs and cots can be provided for kids. Basic bathrooms are small with shower stalls and plastic curtains, but spotlessly clean, while balconies have plastic patio furniture.

All rooms have flat-screen TVs, hairdryers, and safes. Rooms near the pool and bar can be noisy, and some rooms also get road traffic noise.
