Bottom Line

The 245-room Sunrise Beach Hotel is a simply, yet elegantly designed three-and-a-half-pearl hotel on the main street of Protaras. In the heart of the city, the Sunrise Beach is near plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and beaches, but there’s little need to travel off-site. With three restaurants and three bars, plus four nearby restaurants with whom the hotel has half-board deals for guests, dining and drink needs are more than met. The facility has a large, active pool patio that leads directly to the beach. There is squash and tennis courts, a gym, and a spa next door at the adjacent Sunrise Pearl Hotel. Rooms are spacious, simply but nicely decorated, and include balconies. Note that this property is closed from November until March.

Sunrise Beach Hotel

Scene

Simple character, with plenty of entertainment

The Sunrise Beach Hotel focuses on simple leisure. Targeted toward families, the hotel can be bustling, but it doesn’t feel overrun by children. The large swim-up bar is a good indication of the equal-opportunity nature of the hotel. The decor and design of the Sunrise Beach is humble, but not lacking, like some of the comparable hotels in the area. For example, while the pool patio is laid with generic white tiles, the straw roofed bar makes the area feel more beachy than like a neighborhood pool. Brown leather couches and green, blue, and gray accent colors make the large lobby area welcoming while giving the different seating sections individual character. A large mural of figures and animals dancing hangs over a cluster of brown leather furniture.

Like the hotel, the restaurant spaces are simple, but use detail to add character—small things, such as covering patio tables with tablecloths takes the style factor up a notch.

Location

In the heart of Protaras, right off the beach

The Sunrise Beach Hotel is located in the heart of Protaras, within fast walking distance of numerous shops, restaurants, bars, and beaches. There’s little need for a car if you’re intending to stay in Protaras, though the hotel does have underground parking available for a fee. The drive from the airport takes about 50 minutes to an hour.

Rooms

Moderately-sized, simply designed, and with balconies

The rooms and suites at the Sunrise Beach Hotel are designed with light colored fabrics—typically green and yellow—and are reasonably sized. Overall, rooms have a simple modern feel, and upgrading beyond the Standard Room will get you more space, sleeker decor, and (almost) floor-to-ceiling windows looking out at the beach and ocean. Bathrooms are clean and spacious, stocked with a host of bath products. Bathtub/shower combinations are divided with a glass partition. All rooms come with at least one furnished balcony, flat-screen TVs, coffeemaker, and free Wi-Fi -- though it’s not very dependable. A bottle of water and slippers are thoughtful welcome gifts. Some rooms have less than picturesque views of the street, and the noise that accompanies it.

Features

Plenty to do, whether you’re looking for sport or leisure

The Sunrise Beach Hotel pairs spacious rooms with numerous activities and entertainment. Throughout the day and evening, guests can participate in activities led by the hotel’s animation team; these activities can range from water aerobics to dancing and magic demonstrations, or go the leisurely route, and hangout at the swim-up bar. The hotel’s gardens and patios are covered with sun chairs, which are allocated to guests upon check-in, a convenient way to avoid early morning chair battles. The beach is right off the hotel’s pool. It can get crowded, but there are a large number of lounge chairs and a water sport rental shop not too far away (both the chairs and the water sports are run separately from the hotel). Other hotel features include a spacious gym with Technogym equipment, and tennis and squash courts. An on-site gift shop is a convenient place to pick up beach gear and reading materials. Spotty Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and there's a boardroom-style event space for business travelers.

The hotel’s restaurants are all mid-range in price and offer a wide selection of food. Partnering half-board restaurants include Italian, Asian, American, and Greek cuisine. Three bars, including the swim-up bar, offer cocktails and drinks with beach views.
