Bottom Line

The elegant and luxurious Blythswood Square hotel, housed in a grand Georgian building, overlooks its namesake square. While interiors are glitzy and modern, plenty of the building's original character and historical features have been retained. Rooms are sleek and contemporary, and while some are small and dark, all have attractive marble bathrooms and free Wi-Fi. The large spa with an impressive thermal suite and the chic cocktail bar add to the Blythswood's sophisticated ambiance. However, the quality of the breakfast service is reportedly inconsistent, which detracts from this pricey hotel's otherwise luxurious atmosphere.

Scene

Former home of Royal Scottish Automobile Club reborn as chic and ritzy hotel

Home to the Royal Scottish Automobile Club for almost a century, this grand Georgian property was renovated and reopened as the Blythswood Square hotel in 2009. The older section of the building -- which includes the hotel's entrance and lobby -- dates back to 1823. Interiors are spacious and have been given a ritzy, modern makeover, with contemporary design furnishings that complement numerous pieces of automobile memorabilia and artwork that allude to the building's former incarnation. The vibe is chic but relaxed and unstuffy, which attracts couples looking for a little glitz and plenty of Glaswegians, who come for the hotel's popular cocktail bar and restaurant.

Location

Overlooking quiet Blythswood Square, a 10-minute walk from Glasgow center

Map of Blythswood Square

The Blythswood Square hotel overlooks a quiet square of the same name, which was slotted to be the new city center in the Georgian era. It's just west of the heart of Glasgow, and most of the city's major attractions are within walking distance. The O2 ABC Glasgow and King Tut's Wah Wah Hut music venues are both a few blocks away. The nearest train station -- Charing Cross -- is just over a five-minute walk from the hotel, while Buchanan Street, known for its great shopping, is 10 minutes away on foot.

Rooms

Sleek rooms with attractive marble bathrooms and luxury linens, though some are small and dark

The hotel has 100 sleek rooms decorated in purple and gray shades with soft modern furnishings and suspended black drum lampshades. Beds have Harris tweed headboards and Egyptian cotton linens, while impressive bathrooms are almost completely covered in dark Spanish marble. Flatscreen TVs and small minibars come standard in all rooms, and suites feature espresso machines and Tunnock's teacakes. While some rooms are spacious and have pleasant views over the adjacent square, others are dark and tiny, with little illumination beyond a skylight.

Features

Full-service spa with impressive facilities and range of treatments

The hotel's main restaurant offers a breakfast buffet along with a variety of a la carte options -- including a full-Scottish breakfast -- though the quality of the food is reportedly inconsistent. Lunch and dinner is also served a la carte, while the Salon bar offers afternoon tea, light meals, and a popular venue for evening drinks. The property's standout feature is its spa, which has nine treatment rooms, an impressive thermal suite, and a range of massage and beauty treatments. There's no on-site parking -- ironic considering the hotel's former motor club incarnation -- but valet service is available for a fee. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
