Bottom Line

Centrally located off of a popular avenue in Killarney, the three-pearl Brook Lodge Hotel has charming Victorian decor and the inviting atmosphere of a bed-and-breakfast. Guests can start their day with a free made-to-order breakfast, plus there's a homey Residents Bar for evening drinks. The bulk of the 24 guest rooms are spacious and feature an old-fashioned elegance -- which could read as dated -- plus amenities like spacious, modern bathrooms and fireplaces in some rooms. As an alternative, travelers looking for a more luxurious option might want to check out the International Hotel Killarney, which has a fitness center and a game room.

Brook Lodge Hotel

Scene

Old-fashioned hotel that caters to couples

The charming, family-owned Brook Lodge Hotel is an old-fashioned, homey property that opened in 1999. The decor throughout is Victorian -- antique plush patterned chairs are clustered around a fireplace with a wooden mantle in the lobby, while maroon carpeting permeates throughout. Some of the decor appears dated, however, such as the faded salmon-colored carpet in the breakfast room and bar as well as some furnishings and armchairs found throughout the property. Most guests are couples who can be seen congregating in the breakfast room, though families and friends on vacation stay here on occasion as well.

Location

Central to attractions in the city and surrounding areas

It's easy to explore Killarney and nearby attractions from the Brook Lodge: High Street, a popular avenue filled with shops and restaurants, is just a two-minute walk away. Killarney Golf and Fishing Club is a 15-minute walk from the hotel. Many places are best reached by car or bus, including the Killarney National Park, which is a seven-minute drive, and the Muckross House, Gardens & Traditional Farm, which takes 15 minutes by car. The Gap of Dunloe is a 27-minute drive, Ross Castle, an eight-minute car ride, and Torc Waterfalls is 16 minutes away by car. The bus and train stations can be reached on foot in about 10 minutes. It’s a 20-minute drive to Kerry Airport.

Rooms

Elegant, old-fashioned rooms with spacious bathrooms; some have AC and fireplaces

The spacious rooms feature two different decor types, one of which has red carpeting, white linens, and cream loveseats and is more dated in its furnishings, while the other rooms have a light sea green or gray carpet, white linen beds with brown or cream runners, and lovely cream or brown floral wallpaper. Amenities include coffee/tea-makers, iron and ironing boards, free Wi-Fi, and TVs (though not all are flat-screens). Some rooms have air-conditioning or a fireplace, convenient for cozying up on a chilly night. The bathrooms are spacious and have white or cream tiles -- some with floral designs -- long counter tops, and frame-less mirrors, all of which speaks to a more contemporary, modern style. Most bathrooms are outfitted with shower/tub combos with deep basins, though Suites have the more luxurious option of separate walk-in showers and tubs. Havana toiletries and hairdryers are provided.
