Bottom Line

The Savoy Hotel Limerick is an upscale 92-room property set in a sleek glass-and-stone building in the heart of the city. Interiors are polished, and eating and drinking choices are excellent. Rooms are generally well-presented, and those on higher floors feature river and cityscape views, but some guests have complained about maintenance issues. Overall, this is among the best hotels in the city with plenty going for it, although the No. 1 Pery Square Hotel & Spa is a little more refined, if often pricier.

The Savoy Hotel

Scene

Refined-yet-relaxed hotel with polished vibe and buzzing weekend crowd

Opened in 2007 on the site of Limerick's landmark Savoy cinema and theater -- from where its name comes -- the Savoy is one of the few upscale hotels in Limerick. Set in a sleek glass-and-stone building that shares space with some high-end retail outlets, this former Marriott is indeed polished, with a marble reception desk, plenty of warm-wood paneling, and a mixture of leather wingback chairs and velvet-covered seating. The atmosphere is classy and refined, while splashes of color and plenty of potted cactuses create a relaxing and playful vibe. Clientele is a mix of business and leisure travelers, and the hotel is especially popular with weekending couples -- but on Friday and Saturday nights the cocktail bar buzzes with local residents too.

Location

City-center location within walking distance of most attractions

The hotel is located smack in the center of Limerick, beside the once infamous but now slick, pedestrianized shopping street of Bedford Row and adjacent to O'Connell street -- the city's main shopping area. The Shannon River is block away, while the hotel is also within walking distance of Limerick's main tourist attractions, including King John's Castle, the Hunt Museum, and the Limerick City Gallery of Art. Limerick's main train station is about a 10-minute walk away, while Shannon Airport is a 20- to 25-minute drive away.

Rooms

Marble bathrooms with designer toiletries -- though some poor maintenance

Most of the Savoy's 92 rooms are decorated in a smart, modern style with traditional touches, colorful furnishings, and hints of Art Deco. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, bathrobes, and flat-screen TVs, while marble bathrooms feature Molton Brown products. Some higher-floor rooms -- typically suites -- offer river and cityscape views. Upgraded rooms include access to the seventh-floor club lounge. Overall, rooms are well presented, but guests have complained about occasional maintenance issues (burned out lights, broken safes, and the like) and some rooms are showing minor wear and tear.

Features

Excellent eating and drinking options, plus a health center with plunge pool

Breakfast is a highlight, with everything cooked-to-order and served until late morning, but it's not included in standard room rates. The New York-style Hamptons Bar & Grill, located next door to the Savoy, serves relaxed meals from its wood-fired ovens and grills, while the Savoy Restaurant is for more formal dining. The Savoy Bar mixes some impressive cocktails, and is popular on weekends, with more sedate afternoon tea served in the swish Liszt Lounge. A cool club lounge provides free drinks, daily papers, and a balcony with lovely skyline views of the city. There's also a health center with a plunge pool, whirlpool, and steam bath, plus a range of massage treatments. While there's no on-site parking, guests receive discounted rates at a car park just opposite the hotel. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
