Bottom Line

As the old real estate saying goes, the three most important factors are location, location, location. The upscale, apartment-style Citadines Trafalgar Square London is situated in the geographic heart of London -- a nearly unparalleled central location for sightseeing. Its 187 studios and apartments, which can host two to six guests, are spacious, modern, and homey, with en-suite bathrooms, fully equipped kitchenettes, and modern amenities like flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers a stylish lobby lounge, self-service laundry, access to a modern gym next door, and free hot drinks all day. But, there's no restaurant and the continental breakfast is a bit pricey. As an alternative, The Grand at Trafalgar Square will give guests grander common areas and an on-site restaurant and bar, but rooms there are less stylish and most lack kitchenettes.

Scene

Upscale apartment hotel in a historic building with stylish, modern interiors

The Citadines Trafalgar Square London is an apartment hotel situated in a historic 1935 building with an elegant, eight-story gray facade. Inside, the hotel tastefully pairs classic details with bold, modern design thanks to a 2012 renovation. High ceilings and long windows meet paneled walls, while geometric shapes and a palette of gray and yellow dominate the rest of the decor. The faux period corniced ceiling (it's just wallpaper) is a bit of a disappointment, but overall the decor is tasteful and stylish. The cozy lobby lounge is the hotel's best feature, with a parquet floor, gray chevron couches, bright yellow pillows, and a shelf-wall filled with books and finished with a flat-screen TV. The hotel is geared toward business travelers and tourists (including families and groups) who don't mind paying a bit more for the extra living amenities and a central London location.

Location

Exceptional central location for sightseeing, a four-minute walk to Trafalgar Square

This Citadines hotel is situated in the geographic heart of the city, on a major road running from the north river bank straight up to Trafalgar Square (four-minute walk). The street is lined with majestic pale gray period facades, with The Grand hotel across the street and a gym next door. The central location is perfect for traveling to any part of the city in a short amount of time. Most top tourist attractions are within walking distance, but for further jaunts, Charing Cross and Embankment stations (Bakerloo, Northern, Circle, and District Lines) are right around the corner, each about a three-minute walk from the hotel. The hotel offers parking and airport transportation, but both cost extra fees.- Six-minute walk to National Portrait Gallery

Rooms

Roomy and modern studios and apartments for two to six guests with fully equipped kitchenettes

This apartment-style hotel has modern Studios, One-Bedroom, and Two-Bedroom Apartments. The 126 studios (270 square feet or 25 square meters) are the most basic option, but nonetheless are modern, fashionable, and quite roomy for such a central London hotel. They might feature wood floors, dark purple accent walls, and geometric area rugs in gray and yellow. Bathrooms are compact but modern, with beige tiling, square sinks, and shower/tub combos.One-Bedroom and Two-Bedroom Apartments include separate living areas with tables and sofas. The 49 One-Bedroom Apartments measure 300 square feet (28 square meters), and with the sofa beds, can sleep up to four guests. The hotel's 12 Two-Bedroom Apartments measure about 750 square feet (69 square meters) and are split-level, though some guests find the narrow, twisting staircases a nuisance. With their pullout sofas, Two-Bedrooms can accommodate up to six guests. All units have kitchenettes complete with cooking hobs, fridges, dishwashers, microwaves, electric kettles, and dishes and cookware. Other standard amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, desks or tables, irons and ironing boards, electronic safes, and free Wi-Fi. Housekeeping comes weekly, or can come more frequently for an extra fee. Note that guests in street-facing rooms occasionally complain of traffic noise.

The hotel also offers a continental breakfast, but it costs an extra fee and some guests find it pricey.
