Bottom Line

The 23-unit Eric Vokel Boutique Apartments - Atocha Suites are a five-minute walk from Madrid's main train station. The Prado and Reina Sofia are within walking distance from this three-pearl option, and restaurants and bars are close by as well. Apartments are clean and modern, with simple and chic decor. All have fully equipped kitchens, and some have balconies, but housekeeping costs extra. An outdoor whirlpool with a sun deck is a plus, but that's about it for features. Guests who book directly on the hotel website do get free breakfast, though. For a similarly priced alternative in the area, travelers could check out the Rafaelhoteles Atocha, although its rooms aren't as attractive and don't have kitchens. It does add a restaurant, bar, and fitness center, though.

Scene

Clean, simple apartment-style hotel with chic vibe but few features

In typical Eric Vokel style, these apartments combine Nordic and Mediterranean design elements in a clean, uncluttered environment. With fully equipped kitchens in all the apartments, the place is geared toward self-sufficient travelers, both business and leisure. The only real public space here is the outdoor sundeck, with a whirlpool and lounge chairs. Reception hours are limited, and there isn't much of a social vibe here. This place draws families, as well as couples, groups, individuals, and businesspeople.

Location

Quiet location, a five-minute walk from Atocha Station and the Reina Sofia

These apartments are situated on a modest street in a quiet residential neighborhood just south of Atocha Station, a five-minute walk away. The neighborhood has several restaurants and bars, plus a supermarket, and both La Latina and Lavapies -- trendy up-and-coming neighborhoods -- are nearby. Three major art museums are within walking distance. The famed Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia can be reached in about five minutes on foot, the Prado Museum in about 15 minutes, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza in 17 minutes. There's also a metro station at Atocha, providing access to attractions farther afield. Plan on 20 to 30 minutes to arrive at Barajas Airport by car, or 45 minutes by public transportation.

Rooms

Clean, modern apartments with fully equipped kitchens, some with balconies

Apartments are available with one or two bedrooms and one or two bathrooms. All have fully equipped kitchens, and some have terraces. The style is modern and done with light touches that include wood floors, tasteful gray and beige color schemes, eye-catching patterns in sparing doses, and oversized black-and-white murals on walls. Living areas have sofabeds for extra sleeping capacity. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Sleek kitchens feature stainless steel sinks, microwaves, stovetops, coffeemakers, and full-size refrigerators. Modern bathrooms are sparkling clean and include toiletries, bidets, towel warmers, hairdryers, tiled shower/tub combos, or just showers in some. Terraces are furnished with tables and chairs, plus lounge chairs. It should be noted that daily housekeeping costs extra.

Features

Free breakfast for guests who book direct, outdoor whirlpool, computer in lobby, free Wi-Fi, and parking

As these apartments are designed for self-sufficient guests, features are limited. However, guests who book directly on the hotel's website get a free daily breakfast kit with juice, pastries, milk, coffee, and tea. A convenience corner in the lobby provides essentials such as sugar, olive oil, butter, napkins, and the like. The outdoor whirlpool is a bit closed in by surrounding buildings, but the wooden deck provides a nice space to relax on lounge chairs and get some fresh air. A computer is set up in the lobby for guests to use. Reception hours are limited, so guests who arrive after hours must check themselves in using a coded keypad. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property, and free parking also is available.
