The 202-room Hotel Santana is a
family-friendly, upper-middle-range chain hotel, in a busy area of Qawra. It's surrounded by shops,
restaurants, and nightlife, but doesn't have much of an oceanside vibe. Rooms are spacious and clean, but dated and fairly generic;
all rooms have balconies, and suites have kitchenettes, but rooms lack sea views. The hotel has a seasonal outdoor pool and a full-service spa with an indoor pool where guests can chill. While there is a sauna, it costs extra to use.
Scene
A relaxed, cheerful, and unassuming hotel, with plenty of space
The Hotel Santana is geared toward families,
couples, and groups traveling together. The atmosphere in common areas is chain-like, with tile floors, leather sofas, and armchairs, but no real
design vision. There's
nothing fussy about the Hotel Santana, and, although there are no organized
kids activities, they can (and often do) have the run of the place.
Location
In a lively section of Qawra, within walking distance of the beach and other attractions
The Hotel Santana is in a busy area of
Qawra, overlooking St. Paul’s Bay, although the views are unremarkable. There
are plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, and a pharmacy within a short
walk of the hotel. Two beaches -- one rocky and one sandy -- are within a five-minute walk, and there's a dive center right by the entrance.
The lovely seaside promenade is a couple of minute's walk away, and Malta’s National
Aquarium is also nearby.
Rooms
Bright and spacious rooms with unremarkable furniture and decor and modern bathrooms
Rooms at the Hotel Santana are clean and
bright and come in three types: Standard, Superior, and Suites. All rooms have balconies, although there are no sea views and the
countryside and cityscape surrounding the hotel isn’t much to look at.
Superior Rooms are much larger than their Standard counterparts and Suites are huge, with
blinds rather than walls separating the living and bedroom areas. Suites also come with kitchenettes, complete with microwaves and four-burner stoves. But decor is dated, with old upholstery and generic furniture. Bathrooms are contrastingly contemporary, with
spacious walk-in showers and plenty of counter space. Heating and air-conditioning are controlled centrally by the hotel rather than in rooms.
Features
Indoor and outdoor pools, a modern spa, and several dining options
The Hotel Santana features an outdoor pool
on a rooftop terrace, with plenty of lounge chairs and shaded picnic tables. Guests listen to radios around the pool, which may disturb those who prefer peace and quiet. There
is also a large indoor pool with a hot tub (closed in August). The adjacent spa is the property's most modern-looking feature, and it offers massage and beauty treatments, and though there's a sauna, it costs extra to use. There's also a pool table and a game room and karaoke and live performances take place some evenings. The restaurants are cheery and comfortable -- not sophisticated. Moire Restaurant serves buffet-style meals, and La Menta Trattoria serves an a la carte Mediterranean menu. Both dining rooms are casual and cheerful. La Canoa Bar is rustic, with lots of wood, iron, and stone. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property and while the Santana does not offer private parking, there is a free public parking lot across the street.
